*Kwanzaa** Celebration and Rites of Passage Graduation*

Saturday, Dec. 28, 2 to 4 p.m.

Free and open to the public.

In the spirit of "NIA," the community will celebrate the third day of "Kwanzaa", “"Ujima"” – collective work and responsibility – meaning to build and maintain our community together, making our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and solving them together. The event will feature an African libation, the West Las Vegas Arts Center Drum Ensemble, an elder community honor and the graduation for girls and boys in the Rites of Passage program. "Kwanzaa" is an African American and Pan-African holiday that celebrates family, community and culture. Celebrated from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1, its origins are in the first harvest celebrations of Africa from which it takes its name. The name "Kwanzaa" is derived from the phrase ""matunda ya kwanza"" which means "first fruits" in Swahili, a Pan-African language that is the most widely spoken African language. "Nia "means "to make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community, in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness." *      *

Mariachi

**Tamales & Mariachi Festival**

This year’s annual Tamales & Mariachi Festival will be a celebration of family, culture and holiday traditions! The festival offers the community an abundance of "tamale" varieties from all over Latin America. Festival admission is free and open to the public. A variety of vendors will sell refreshments.

 

Festival goers will enjoy live "mariachi" music, "folklorico" dancers, Mexican "antojitos", and a host of artisan vendors. Kick off the holiday season with great authentic "tamales" by some of Las Vegas' best chefs. The SerVehZah Bottle Shop and Tap Room will offer delicious brews and beverages for sale. With arts and crafts activities available for the kids, there will be much for the whole family to enjoy.

 

Headlining the festival entertainment are three different internationally renowned mariachi bands. Acclaimed by audiences at the Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and other major U.S. venues, three-time Grammy Award-winning "Mariachi Los ""Camperos" will perform their skillfully arranged versions of classic mariachi tunes, blended with regional styles of traditional music. Two-time Grammy Award winner "Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea "bring both traditional regional music and songs from their 25th anniversary album to the stage. Singer Sandra Guevara will sing with renowned "Mariachi Alma del Sol". Other entertainers also will perform. This event is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. 

 

Parking will be available in the City Centre covered parking garage, accessible from Third Street/Clark Avenue. Parking also is available at the city garage at 500 S. Main St.

A Solo Exhibition by Miguel Rodriguez

Join us for a solo exhibition by artist Miguel Rodriguez. Rodriguez moved to Las Vegas from Kansas in 2001. He earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in ceramic sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute and an Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While working as a sculptor for a casino signage company, he mastered sculpting foam and casting large rubber molds, key skills for creating his monumental works. Rodriguez has completed multiple sculpture and mural commissions throughout Las Vegas and currently serves as a visiting assistant professor of Ceramics at UNLV.

Calls For Artists

 

*Windows on First Temporary Public Art Program*

Deadline Nov. 15, 2024

 

We invite artists to create original, site-specific installations presented within the context of the First Street Art Trail. The proposed installation should relate to the space and the windows should form a cohesive relationship.

 

The artwork will be on display for approximately six months, beginning in April 2025. The artist or team of artists will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and de-installation.

*Lunar New Year Exhibition - Year of the Snake*

Deadline Dec. 30, 2024

 

We are issuing a call for artists to submit artwork for the 14th annual "Lunar New Year Art Exhibition "2025, celebrating the Year of the Snake. This exhibition will showcase contemporary and traditional art inspired by the cultural and symbolic significance of the snake, representing transformation, wisdom and intuition.

 

Selected artists will exhibit their works of art at the Mayor’s Gallery, where the exhibit will be open to the public from January 2025 through April 2025. Artists of all mediums are welcome to submit.
