Song Seats 2023, Mixed Media

This site-specific Design and Build outreach installation was created collaboratively by Design and Build program alumni and local artists, Scottie Burgess and Tiffany Matheson. The project was created in partnership with the Lowry Foundation as part of several artworks that contribute to the Lowry Art + Architecture loop, which celebrates the Lowry Foundation’s 25th anniversary. Furthermore, this exhibition was created through partial funding received from Denver Arts & Venues’ P.S. You Are Here grant program, Clark’s Market and MOA.

About Song Seats
Set in strategic locations found slightly off the winding gravel path sit three pairs of colorfully painted chairs, nestled in small surrounds of woven willow branches that allude to bird nests. The coloration of each pair of chairs represents a different native bird that passes through the Lowry Dam Trail on their annual migration.

On the seat pairs is an image tag of the bird represented and a QR code that leads visitors to a link to play the bird’s call, creating an interactive experience. While sitting in seats that once were used at historic Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, guests will be taking in nature’s music and light show, appreciating the ever changing sun and hearing the sound of wind in the native flora, the softly burbling creek, and the sweet musical notes of the birds.

The land that has always been a sanctuary for the animals will now offer a sacred respite for travelers along the trail, providing time to rest, reflect, and to appreciate nature and art. Peaceful sounds of the local birds adds to the tranquility of the environment. Upcycling seats from the Museum of Outdoor Arts’ Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre considers sustainability while reflecting on the amphitheater’s history.
