Your Weekly South City Update | Your Weekly South City Update | City Council Recap, Next Biotech Speaker Session and more | August 16, 2024

Mayor's Update     Hello neighbor! Last weekend, South San Francisco was recognized by the National League of Cities (NLC) as one of their official stops on their Centennial Roadshow: 100 Years, 100 Cities. We hope you feel just as proud as we do to be recognized for our city’s commitment to diversity and resilience. Let’s keep going, South City!   City Council Recap At this week’s meeting, we recognized Matt Samson as our new Fire Chief. With a distinguished career in firefighting and emergency management spanning 25 years, Chief Samson brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to serving our community. We also proclaimed August 14 as Amgen Day. Amgen has been a vital part of the South San Francisco community for 20 years with the second largest research and development site in the United States, currently employing approximately 600 staff members dedicated to discovering, developing, and delivering innovative human therapeutics. The CEO of Peninsula Clean Energy also walked us through a presentation about their operations and how South San Francisco has been leading the way in sustainable energy. I first got involved with Peninsula Clean Energy as a high school intern years ago asking residents to support the creation of PCE. Today, I proudly sit on the Board, and we have saved South City residents over $17 million since 2016 while providing clean energy and rebates for electrification throughout the city. To improve accessibility, we now livestream our city council meetings on our YouTube channel. Catch the next meeting live or watch the replay. Watch the Replay   $13.89 Million Awarded for Permanent Housing in South San Francisco Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the County of San Mateo will receive $13.89 million to provide Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) for people experiencing homelessness. The Homekey grant will help convert a hotel in South San Francisco into 45 studio apartments along with an on-site manager’s unit. The project is key to the County’s strategy of moving vulnerable people into permanent housing to address the homelessness crisis. This grant tackles the homelessness crisis head on, will get people into much needed housing, and also paves the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for our community.
