Fremont Cares: A Mother’s Journey of Hope and Resilience

After “Stacy” left her physically and mentally abusive partner, she decided to seek assistance and services at the Fremont Family Resource Center (FRC) [ https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/human-services/fremont-family-resource-center ]. As an unhoused single mother with two young children and a third on the way, leaving that relationship left Stacy in a vulnerable position with no benefits or support.

Still, the well-being of herself and her growing family remained her number one priority. During this challenging time, her case manager worked diligently to build trust by providing guidance and education on the FRC’s various programs. This support helped Stacy feel empowered and confident in accessing the resources available to her.

Stacy was able to apply for public benefits and was referred to the Linkages Program [ https://abode.org/services ], managed by Abode Services. This program helps cover move-in costs for unhoused parents working toward employment or in need of income. Simultaneously, Stacy also began prenatal care so she could be as healthy as possible for her unborn child.

While waiting for approval into the Linkages Program, Stacy was accepted into the City’s Winter Relief Program [ https://www.fremont.gov/residents/homeless-response/homeless-services/winter-relief-program ], where she obtained a house cleaning job. Stacy also was fortunate to have additional support from her mother and a friend who was going through a similar experience.

In April, Stacy was accepted into the Linkages Program and moved into an affordable rental unit in Union City. Stacy welcomed her baby after moving in, and she received donations from the Compassion Network [ https://www.compassionnetwork.org/ ] and furniture from Season of Sharing [ https://www.alamedacountysocialservices.org/our-services/Shelter-and-Housing/Other-Support/season-of-sharing ].

Stacy’s resiliency, coupled with support from the FRC, helped her turn the corner, and she and her children continue to live happy and healthy lives today.
