Civics Academy

Auburn’s Civics Academy [ http://www.auburnwa.gov/civicsacademy ] is returning for Fall 2024! Register [ https://auburn.seamlessdocs.com/f/CivicsAcademy ] for the opportunity to be a part of the 2024 sessions happening from September – November!

*What is it?*

Auburn Civics Academy is an 11-week course held one evening a week from 6 - 8:30 p.m. beginning Thursday, September 5, 2024 with three Saturday sessions from 9 a.m. - noon. Classes are held in multiple locations in the City of Auburn. Attendees must be willing to commit to attendance of sessions (can miss TWO sessions and still graduate).

*Who can apply?*

* Anyone who is an Auburn resident, business owner/employee, in school (16-years and older), has a general interest in Auburn, and not running or currently serving in a political office. "Priority will be given to Auburn residents."
* Participants must be willing to commit to the attendance of all sessions (you can miss two and still graduate).

*What is the financial assistance that is offered?*

One of the ways we’re addressing equity within Neighborhood Programs is to reduce barriers that would stop community members from participating in events. For the first time ever, I’m excited to announce that we’re offering financial assistance (child / adult care vouchers, transportation assistance) to remove those barriers. This also includes food, as we provide a dinner every week before starting the class. For community members interested, there's a question on the 1st page of the application and after it's selected I will connect with the community member to get that process rolling.

*What are the objectives of this Academy?*

* To involve and engage residents and businesses in learning about and understanding the operation of city government, and to improve communications between the City and those who live and work here.
* To provide insight into how decisions are made, how City funds are allocated, and how City departments operate.
* To empower and encourage a larger number of residents and business owners to become more civically engaged in the future decisions affecting Auburn's quality of life.
