Our RapidRide J Line project will make it easier and more convenient for you to get around the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown. Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to class at the University of Washington, visiting the doctor, or shopping at local businesses, these upgrades will help you travel faster and more reliably.

As part of the project, we’ll upgrade streets, sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, streetlights, and traffic signals. We’ll also add protected bike lanes and replace the water main on Eastlake Ave E. These upgrades will support our local businesses, make it easier for you to get to housing, and help create safer, more connected neighborhoods for everyone.

Seattle to Portland Bike Ride

We look forward to the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic this weekend. Riders will depart from the University of Washington around 5 AM on Saturday, July 12.This is a friendly reminder for drivers to watch for participants going along University Bridge and Fuhrman Ave E. Please stay clear of the construction areas and watch for all traffic signs and directions. Upcoming Work on I-5

University District Construction

*Panel work on Roosevelt Way NE and NE 43rd St *

Traffic is shifted east around the work zone on Roosevelt Way NE.

As early as Monday, July 21, we will replace concrete roadway panels at the intersection of Roosevelt Way NE and NE 43rd St. This work will take approximately a week to complete. During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane around the work area, and bikes and scooters will be routed onto the sidewalk.

*Additional work activities in the University District*

We are working on several other activities in the area, including:


* Crews will install storm drainage systems and concrete panels along NE 42nd St between 11th Ave NE and Roosevelt Way NE during the week of July 14. We plan to reopen the street by July 18. Traffic is shifted around the work zone, but sidewalks and alleys remain open.  

* From July 18 at 7 PM to July 21 at 6 AM, we will pave NE 43rd St opposite alleyways between 11th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE. Concrete removal is on Friday evening, with pouring over the weekend. Access to the alleyways will remain closed from NE 43rd St until early Monday. 

* Starting the week of July 21, crews will install temporary lights and pole foundations across the University District for two to three weeks. Impacts will include one-day lane and sidewalk closures. 

The activities in the University District involve heavy machinery and demolition, so expect loud noise. You should also anticipate vibrations and dust.

Eastlake Construction

*Paving on Eastlake Ave E between Fuhrman Ave E and Harvard Ave E  *

*We are paving the west side of Eastlake Ave E between Fuhrman Ave E and Harvard Ave E.* Traffic is shifted onto the new pavement on the east side, and the left turn from northbound Eastlake to Fuhrman will not be permitted. This process will take several weeks and involves heavy machinery and demolition, *so **expect loud noise. *We are coordinating with businesses ahead of work that will require temporary driveway closures.

*E Allison St closed between Eastlake Ave E and Harvard Ave E* 

We are installing a new water main on E Allison St between Eastlake Ave E and Harvard Ave E, which will remain closed. During this time, vehicles cannot turn right from northbound Eastlake Ave E to southbound Harvard Ave E or left from northbound Harvard Ave E to southbound Eastlake Ave E.  

To reach Eastlake Ave E, northbound drivers should continue past the closure and detour using NE 41st St. Local access to driveways and alleyways on E Allison St will be available from Harvard Ave E. However, some areas may be temporarily blocked. Affected properties will be notified of any closures.

* Road work on Eastlake Ave E between E Galer St and E Garfield St*

Traffic will remain on the west side of Eastlake Ave E.

We will start paving work on the east side of Eastlake Ave E, between E Galer St and E Garfield St, as early as July 21. Paving involves heavy machinery and demolition to break up the existing road, so please expect loud noise from this work. Afterward, crews will pour concrete over a foot deep to create the new street. 

During this process, traffic will remain shifted to the west side of Eastlake Ave E, with one lane for northbound and one for southbound travel. After paving the east side of Eastlake Ave E, we will follow the same steps on the west side. We will coordinate with businesses and residential buildings in advance of any driveway impacts.
