FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 30, 2025Indy DPW extends shifts, adds crews for early season pothole blitz

INDIANAPOLIS – This week, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) seized on an early opportunity to fill thousands of potholes across the county with hot-mix asphalt as part of a three-day blitz.

Taking advantage of the mild January weather and dry conditions, 120 Indy DPW AFSCME Local #725 workers divided into 20 crews hit the streets for 10-hour shifts on Tuesday and Wednesday. Third shift personnel were moved to earlier shifts to maximize Indy DPW’s pothole response. Efforts will continue on Thursday, pending the arrival of rain showers.

“The City of Indianapolis continues to focus on finding innovative ways to improve our roads – from increasing annual investment in our transportation capital budget to over $200 million, to leveraging opportunities to fill potholes with more effective hot-mix asphalt earlier in the winter season,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “I am grateful to our Indy DPW AFSCME crew members for seeing a window of opportunity and pivoting crews to tackle potholes across the city.”

On the first two days of the blitz, crews:

-

Filled over 13,000 potholes

-

Dropped an average of 134 tons of hot mix each day – a per day average higher than the entirety of the month prior to the blitz

-

Closed nearly 600 service requests filled via the Mayor’s Action Center and RequestIndy

“Longtime Indianapolis residents know the havoc that the winter freeze-thaw cycle plays on our roads,” said Councilor Kristin Jones, chair of the Public Works Committee. “I’m thankful for Indy DPW’s extra effort to patch as many potholes as possible while we’ve got warmer, dry weather.

"AFSCME Local #725 is always going to answer the call and step up when our city needs us,” said Steve Quick, AFSCME Local #725 president. “These folks – who were in snow plows for 12 hours a day a couple weeks ago - are sacrificing time away from their families to help make Indy a better place. Please drive safe when you see them out because we want everyone to make it home at the end of the day.”

In 2024, Indy DPW resolved more than 21,000 service requests filed through the Mayor’s Action Center.

Mayor Joe Hogsett's five-year, $1 billion capital infrastructure plan includes $464 million for street construction. Another $109 million will be targeted for drainage in stormwater projects that help to extend the life of our roadways.
