View as Webpage May 1, 2024 Reno Connect | Senior Connect Connecting Citizens to our Community   May 2024 Updates - Older Americans Month   On behalf of the City of Reno and the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee, Happy Older Americans Month! May this special time be filled with cherished memories, laughter, and moments of reflection on the invaluable contributions older adults make to our communities and society as a whole. Wishing you all continued health, happiness, and fulfillment throughout this month and beyond. The City of Reno will be offering a variety of events and activities all month long! All events are free, and we encourage you to invite your friends! Below are activities and events throughout the month! Check out this calendar of events! Senior Art Show The City of Reno Senior Citizen Advisory Committee, in partnership with the City of Reno Arts and Culture department, will honor the creativity of Reno’s Seniors with the third annual Senior Art Show at the historic McKinley Arts & Culture Center located at 925 Riverside Drive in Reno. The exhibit will be on display and open to the public from April 22 to June 7, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the McKinley East and the West Gallery at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center. Line Dance Classes Every Thursday during the month of May, join us for free line dance classes for seniors taught by Sara B Dancin'. No matter your skill level, everyone is welcome to participate! Dates: May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 from 3pm-4pm Location: Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center, 1301 Valley Road, in the Bullfrog Room. Ice Cream Socials Join us to enjoy free soft serve ice cream by Super Swirl AND a chance to shred unwanted documents! Free shredding services will be available at each date and location. Dates: May 7 from 11am-1pm at Teglia's Paradise Park Activity Center - 2745 Elementary Dr. May 14 from 11am-1pm at Dorothy McAlinden Park - 14000 Stead Blvd. May 21 from 11am-1pm at Neil Road Recreation Center - 3925 Neil Rd. Pool Party Free pool party for seniors to come relax, have fun, and enjoy the water! Refreshments will be provided while supplies last. Date: May 10 from 1pm-3pm at Northwest Pool - 2925 Apollo Way Poetry Workshop Free poetry workshops sponsored by the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee, for seniors to unleash their creativity, discuss poetry and share your thoughts with each other! Second Monday of the Month from 1pm-2pm. Next class is scheduled for May 13th. Washoe County Senior Center, Conference Room (1155 Ninth St) City of Reno Senior Citizen Advisory Committee (SCAC) Meeting Join fellow neighbors and friends at the next SCAC meeting. Public information can be found at the City of Reno website. Tuesday, May 14, at 2pm. Located at McKinley Arts and Culture Center, Board Room.(925 Riverside Dr.) Arts and Craft Appreciation Day Senior Art Engagement Day hosted by Sierra Arts Foundation at the Reno Housing Authority, Community Room - 1400 Silverada Blvd. Registration is required, kindly fill out this form. Date: May 15 from 10am-12pm Spanish Technology Classes Free technology courses for seniors offered solely in Spanish, focusing on acquiring basic and advanced skills for using smartphones. Date: May 15 & 16 from 9am-10:30am at Evelyn Mount Northeast Center. Limited capacity, kindly fill out this form. Adaptive Cycling Day for Seniors The City of Reno recently launched an Adaptive Cycling Center at the Rosewood Nature Study Area in Reno, Nevada. The center offers a membership-based program that allows persons with disabilities and seniors to access our many adaptive bikes and jump directly on the trails, no bike transport needed. FREE day for Older Americans Month! Date: May 16 from 8am-12pm at 6800 Pembroke Dr. Downsizing Seminar Are you overwhelmed by clutter and unsure how to handle your belongings? Attend our complimentary seminar for practical tips on organization and decluttering unwanted items. Date: May 16 from 1pm-2pm at the Sierra View Library at the Reno Town Mall. Dementia-Friendly Seminar Join us for a Dementia-Friends Information session which aims to equip community members with a level of knowledge and comfort regarding dementia. Date: May 21 from 1pm-2pm at Neil Road Recreation Center Budget Friendly Cooking Class Are you interested in a budget-friendly cooking class for seniors? Sponsored by Councilmember Ebert, join at the Elks Lodge to learn tips, tricks, and delicious recipes without breaking the bank. Limited capacity, kindly fill out this form to reserve your spot. Date: May 30 from 11am-2pm at the Reno Elks Lodge (597 Kumle Ln) Annual Sock Hop Step back into time with our annual Older Americans Month Sock Hop! Enjoy ice cream sundaes and music, dancing, and fun. Date: May 31 from 2pm-4pm at the Washoe County Senior Center (1155 E. 9th St) City of Reno Parks and Recreation Activities Free recreation activities for seniors throughout the month of May! Tai Chi - May 6 from 8am-9am at Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center - 1301 Valley Road. Chair Yoga - May 6 from 10am - 11am at Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center - 1301 Valley Road. Introduction to Pickleball - May 8 from 9am-11:30am at Plumas Gym - 575 Monroe St. Water Fitness - May 13 from 10:30am-11:45 am at Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center - 1301 Valley Road. Save the Date! 2024 Senior Summer Games: Are you interested in participating in the 2024 Summer Senior Games? Check out this calendar of events for the summer games! Games begin in August. Inaugural Senior Community Garden Party An intergenerational gathering that will have senior friendly gardening infrastructure. May 19th from 2pm-4pm at Reno Food Systems Park Farm (3295 Mayberry Dr) Limited capacity, RSVP here. Pioneer Center Golden Encore is a new lifelong learning entertainment program tailor made for seniors. Live performances take place in venues across Washoe County and admission is free. To learn more about the upcoming schedule, visit Pioneer Center Golden Encore. Dementia Friendly Community Group Meetings – The next meeting is scheduled for May 2nd from 1pm-2:30pm. Help support your community in becoming more respectful, supportive and inclusive with people living with dementia and their care partners.
