** It’s raining, it’s pouring, and it’s hot out
------------------------------------------------------------

Summer in Florida is full of surprises. We are under an extreme heat warning one day and a severe thunderstorm warning the next. Sometimes we get both in the same day! Not to mention the potential threat of hurricanes as the tropics remain active this time of year. The weather may be unpredictable, but you don’t have let it catch you off guard.

Knowing how to be safe and prepared no matter what the Florida sky decides will make the extremes a lot less scary. Read the following tips for some calm in the storm and relief from the heat:
* Know the signs of heat illness and how to treat them. Visit cdc.gov/extreme-heat and orlando.gov/extremeheat for more information.
* Start your hurricane preparations today! Learn more about hurricane preparedness at orlando.gov/imready.
* Don’t grow complacent to severe thunderstorms. Take extra precautions when those summer afternoon storms roll in. Stay alert and be prepared by visiting orlando.gov/thunderstorm.

Another day, another park, another place to play!

In the 1980’s, Ms. Rodgers was a resident who advocated for the park’s construction so nearby kids could have a safe place to play. Decades later, it continues to be a space for all. That includes the bald eagles who nest here. This open green space includes:

** Never judge a sweeper by its size
------------------------------------------------------------

As our roadways continue to evolve to accommodate all modes of transportation, we knew it was time to make a “mini” change.

In order to access our growing number of protected bike lanes, the Streets and Stormwater Division purchased our first “mini” street sweeper. This new street sweeper is able to fit into smaller spaces, clearing our bike lanes of debris to keep our stormwater drains clear of leaves.

If you see the “mini” street sweeper out on the road, give it a big wave to welcome it to our city’s streets.

** Solid Waste thanks their biggest fans
------------------------------------------------------------

The Solid Waste Division wanted to do something special as a thank you for all the waves and enthusiasm our neighborhood kids show them along their route. Enter the Kids' Kit, a goodie bag that includes a Solid Waste T-shirt, a small garbage truck toy and a garbage cart pencil holder. While on their routes, our drivers can grab these goodie bags and surprise their biggest fans as a thank you for making their day.

Recently, Sanitation Equipment Operators Anthony Parks, Luzelenia “Lucy” Vazquez, and Roberto Baez took some time to meet with their fans and surprised them with a Kids' Kit. The kids were all smiles when they received their goodies from their heroes.

Thank you, Solid Waste team, for taking the time to make a child's day!

** Sharing joy one air hug at a time
------------------------------------------------------------

Admit it, you love a good balloon arch. Whether you’ve really thought about it or not, when you walk into an event and see one of those intricately designed arches or oversized decorative balloons, you immediately start planning your next selfie with the one-of-a-kind work of balloon art. It’s that kind of excitement and happiness people get from balloons that inspired Katy Baron to open Glitzfully Party Co., her very own designer balloon business.

Prior to Covid-19, Katy, like a lot of now small business owners, worked in the corporate arena, as a marketing project manager. As our community moved into the thick of the pandemic, one of the only ways many of us were able to show love to our friends and family was by delivering balloons with a card or gift to their front doors, leaving them with a smile. It was being a courier of “air hugs” and seeing the joy on the faces of others when they received something as simple as a balloon that had Katy wanting to share more of that joy. This led her to start her own business to create customized balloons.

Having lived in Orlando since leaving Gainesville after grad school, it was a no brainer for Katy to open her business and raise her family in the Mills 50 District, where the arts, culture and diversity matched her business style and felt like home. To visit Glitzfully, head to 1330 Wilfred Drive, or check out the website at glitzfully.com.
