More About the Artist Laureate Program

The City of Culver City's Artist Laureate program is a collaboration between the City of Culver City—the City Council and Cultural Affairs Commission—and Culver City Arts Foundation. Funding is made possible by the City’s percent for art program and a grant from the Culver City Arts Foundation, dedicated to supporting the arts in Culver City.

Artist Laureates are appointed for a two-year term from one of three arts discipline categories—fine and visual arts, performing arts, and literary arts—to serve as cultural ambassador and advocate for the arts within Culver City. The Artist Laureate designation recognizes artistic excellence, supports the continuing development of the artist’s work, and spotlights the important role individual artists play in contributing to a vibrant, equitable and healthy community, enriching the city’s creative economy, and positively impacting the quality of life for people of all ages.

To date, there have been two appointed Culver City Artist Laureates since the program began in 2020 with Katy Krantz and Alexey Steele. Additionally, Dr. Janet Cameron Hoult served as the Honorary Artist Laureate for Poetry from 2015 to 2019.

This past April, Artist Laureate Katy Krantz unveiled "Dear Culver City…", a multidisciplinary project that includes the ceramic contributions of over 1,000 Culver City community members that is currently installed at Culver City Hall. Artist Laureate Krantz led over 30 ceramics workshops across the city, engaging with residents and stakeholders of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The workshops were comprised of two activities: a word brainstorm and a ceramics project. Krantz asked workshop participants to think of words that came to mind when considering Culver City’s past, present, and future. These words were collected on large sheets of paper. Participants then chose one word to stamp in wet clay, which Krantz then fired and glazed. All words written on paper were alphabetized and compiled into documents, which were then given to seven local poets who created poems inspired by the collected words.
