Late Wednesday, Harvest Properties on Great America Parkway heard frantic peeps from a nearby sewer drain and reported a stranded family of ducks to Water & Sewer Utilities. Animal Control Officer Antje Morris skillfully retrieved ten ducklings and was convinced others remained trapped since Mama Duck hadn't appeared.

Sewer crew to the rescue! Responders Filipe Carrillo, George Irias, Mickey Chaboya and Will Trimble noisily extended a drain snake, hoping to startle them through the line and into Officer Morris's waiting hands at the next drain opening. When that didn't work, CCTV technicians Joe Cadena and Tzirahuen Hernandez ran their remote-operated camera down the line. The eleventh duckling emerged, but Mama Duck hopped the camera, doubled back, found the exit and flew away. Rescuers and onlookers lamented until the officer explained; if they'd been retrieved together, Officer Morris would have sought a safe place to release the family, but if a male duck found them, he would have killed the ducklings.

With Mama flying to safety, Officer Morris took the ducklings to Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (formerly Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley) where they'll enjoy a comfy, protected life until being released into the wild at the appropriate age: a duck rescue triumph thanks to Harvest Properties, Water & Sewer Utilities and Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority!
