Orlandoans, prepare for Monday. No, it’s not another tropical storm, but it's definitely a surge of sorts. This weekend you’ll want to guard your ankles from carts at the stores as families race through the aisles for last minute school shopping. Then get ready for the ultimate Mario Kart experience Monday morning as approximately 200,000 students will be on the road (via bus, car, bike, walking) trying to make it to the first day of the new school year before the morning bell’s last ring.

Take it from us, being prepared is the only way to survive this annual day of academic-fueled, organized chaos and excitement. Know your alternative routes, know where the school zones are, keep your eyes open for pedestrians and bikers and, above all else, let’s all wish our youngest residents and their teachers a happy first day of school!

** Learn more about Hispanic culture through the arts
------------------------------------------------------------

Arts are an intrinsic part of Hispanic heritage, which is why the city annually hosts an art exhibit in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage month to further illustrate the richness of Latin American history culture.

This year’s art exhibition aims to celebrate Hispanic pioneers, both locally and nationally, who have inspired new generations and demonstrate the spirit of innovation, resilience and unity that defines the Hispanic experience.

We’re seeking local artists to showcase their artwork during this exhibition in the Terrace Gallery at Orlando City Hall. Deadline for submissions is August 25.

** Gearing up with modern facilities
------------------------------------------------------------

On Wednesday, August 7, we broke ground on Fire Station 6, the final piece of our three-station modernization project. This marks a significant milestone in our commitment to upgrading some of our aging fire stations to better serving our community.

Orlando Fire Stations 11 and 9 were the first of three stations to be replaced with modern facilities equipped with the latest technology to ensure our firefighters have the tools they need to protect our community.

With an expected completion date of Fall 2025, the newly constructed Station 6 will ensure we continue to provide top-notch fire protection for Baldwin Park, Milk District, Orlando's Executive Airport and surrounding neighborhoods.

As a city, Orlando is committed to continuing to invest in public safety by modernizing existing fire stations and building new facilities to keep pace with our growing community.

** That’s a wrap on a summer of learning
------------------------------------------------------------

Whether it was scooping ice cream or working as a camp counselor, we all remember our first summer job. Maybe it wasn’t glamorous, but it did help us learn more about life and that’s why we’re celebrating nearly 600 teens from across the city who took part in career exploration through the Summer Youth Employment Program.

Yesterday, Mayor Dyer and District 2 Commissioner Tony Ortiz joined staff and partners to recognize youth who completed this year’s program. While out of school for the summer, high school students ages 15 through 19 worked jobs at local businesses where they gained insight into potential careers and networked with area professionals. Participants also attended workshops to build their employability skills including resume building, dressing for success and financial literacy. Wow, we wish we had this when we were young!

We’re proud to support these individuals as they navigate the workforce with confidence and self-sufficiency to pursue and achieve their goals. Help us wish them good luck in their future endeavors.

** What's brewing before school starts

If you find yourself in the middle of the back-to-school rush and need a moment to sit down and take a load off, look no further than Sideward Brewing Co., located in The Milk District, owned and operated by brothers Garrett and Austin Ward and Mandy Protheroe.

Before opening their own microbrewery, the trio collectively gained experience from not only some of Orlando’s most notable breweries and restaurants, but from across the nation. Mandy and Garrett worked for breweries including Cask & Larder, Redlight Redlight, Red Cypress Brewing and Coppertail Brewing Co. Austin has a background in the service industry, having worked for the Biltmore Estate and Yosemite National Park.

Now celebrating their fifth year of business, Sideward Brewing Co. is known for its welcoming and relaxed environment, specialty beers, quality food and unique culture. It’s also known for their active role in The Milk District Main Street and neighborhood.
