"Crews work carefully around utilities as they install new drainage systems. "

Our RapidRide J Line project will make it easier and more convenient for you to get around the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown. Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to class at the University of Washington, visiting the doctor, or shopping at local businesses, these upgrades will help you travel faster and more reliably.

As part of the project, we’ll upgrade streets, sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, streetlights, and traffic signals. We’ll also add protected bike lanes and replace the water main on Eastlake Ave E. These upgrades will support our local businesses, make it easier for you to get to housing, and help create safer, more connected neighborhoods for everyone.

Beat the Bridge Run

We’re looking forward to the annual Beat the Bridge Run [ https://www2.breakthrought1d.org/site/TR/Walk/PacificNorthwestChapter4700?fr_id=9991&pg=entry&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] this Saturday, May 10, from 7 to 10 AM! This is a friendly reminder for drivers to watch for participants going along University Bridge and Fuhrman Ave E. Please stay clear of the construction areas and watch for all traffic signs and directions. Have a great race!

Where Work is Busiest

RapidRide J Line crews are active in various locations throughout the University District and Eastlake neighborhoods. Below is a brief overview of our current construction activities.

*Paving in the University District*

Crews repave NE 43rd St.

"Crews repave NE 43rd St. "

Pavement replacement continues on NE 43rd St in the University District between Roosevelt Way NE and 11th Ave NE. We will reduce lanes when working in intersections, but we are not closing Roosevelt or 11th Ave NE. You can expect typical construction impacts like noise, dust, and vibrations. Pedestrian and cyclist access will remain throughout. Cyclists biking southbound on Roosevelt Way NE must merge onto the sidewalk at the NE 43rd St intersection.

*Installing Electrical Cables in the University District*

Underground electrical cable installation continues at several locations in the University District. Starting on May 19, crews will be working at Roosevelt Way NE and NE 42nd St, requiring lane closures on NE 42nd St. At least one lane will be maintained, and flaggers will direct traffic. Periodic sidewalk detours may be needed for this work.

*Upcoming Closure on Eastlake Ave E and Harvard Ave E*

As a reminder, starting on Saturday, May 10, we will close northbound Eastlake Ave E between E Allison St and Harvard Ave E to install a new water main. Northbound Harvard Ave E will reopen. All northbound Eastlake Ave E traffic will be detoured to Harvard Ave E at E Allison St; northbound Harvard Ave E traffic, including trucks, should continue north on Harvard Ave E.

Southbound Eastlake Ave E and both directions of E Allison St will remain open. Local access to driveways, parking lots, and residential buildings will still be available.

For more information on bus stop relocations during these closures, please visit King County Metro’s website [ https://kingcounty.gov/en/dept/metro?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].

*Nightwork at Eastlake Ave E and E Lynn St*

As early as May 20, we will be working at night, between 7 PM and 5 AM, on E Lynn St. We will install new drainage systems. This change in hours will allow us to accommodate daytime traffic accessing I-5 from E Lynn St. Please expect lane closures around the work areas. We will re-open the lanes during the daytime. This work is expected to take one week to complete.

*Drainage Work on E Boston St and Eastlake Ave E*

Starting as soon as May 14, we will temporarily close parts of E Boston St and Eastlake Ave E to install new drainage systems. This closure is expected to last about one to two weeks. Access for residents and businesses will remain open. Traffic on Eastlake Ave E will be redirected to the west side during the work. Additionally, the staircases on the east side of Eastlake Ave E, between E Newton St and E Boston St, may be inaccessible to pedestrians during this time.

*Water main work from E Galer St to E Blaine St *

We continue to work on replacing Seattle Public Utilities’ 100-year-old water main on Eastlake Ave E from E Galer St to E Blaine St. Crews will dig trenches to remove the old water main and install a new one. You can expect lane closures as we direct traffic around the work zone. This work will take place on weekdays and weekends. Starting as soon as Saturday, May 10, there will be increased noise between 7 AM and 10 PM.

Night work at the intersection of Fairview Ave E and E Galer St.

"Nightwork at the intersection of Fairview Ave E and E Galer St. "

Additionally, we will be working at night on Monday, May 19, and Tuesday, May 20 to minimize traffic impacts during the daytime. This work will take place on Eastlake Ave E between E Garfield St and E Galer St and will involve increased noise during nighttime hours, between 7 PM and 5 AM. We will complete the most impactful work before 10 PM.

*Utility work between Yale Ave N and E Aloha St*

We are upgrading the drainage system on Fairview Ave E, between Yale Ave N and E Aloha St. To do this work, we will close the southbound right lane along Fairview Ave N as well as the road running alongside it. Please remain safe during these closures and follow all detour signs.

Guest article by Tyler Vasquez

"Tyler Vasquez, ""Cascade Bicycle Club’s" [ https://cascade.org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]" Seattle Policy and Advocacy Manager, shares how the RapidRide J Line Project isn’t just about better transit—it’s about boosting local businesses, bringing more customers to your doorstep, and building a healthier community."

"May is Bike Everywhere Month [ https://cascade.org/rides-events/community-events/bike-everywhere-month-presented-amazon-microsoft-lime/celebration?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]. That means it’s the perfect time to highlight people who bike and scooter around Seattle. In Eastlake, the new RapidRide J Line is designed to make it safer and easier for everyone, whether you bike, walk, or ride transit. By calming traffic on Eastlake Ave, we can create a more inviting neighborhood, encouraging folks to stop by. It’s a great way to support our local small businesses with more foot traffic.

From my experience, people who bike to shop tend to visit more often, stay longer, and spend more money than people who drive. Whether you are traveling to Eastlake to visit a friend for coffee or eat at one of the restaurants, biking allows you to enjoy the charm throughout the neighborhood. Studies show [ https://economicdevelopment.extension.wisc.edu/articles/walkability-means-better-business-issue-188-july-2019/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#:~:text=Pedestrians%20and%20cyclists%20may%20purchase%20fewer%20items%20in,sales%20by%2030%20percent%2C%20according%20to%20one%20source. ] that adding safe bike lanes can boost sales in commercial areas by up to 30 percent.

In Seattle, food service jobs along Broadway, just up the hill, grew by more than 30 percent after the city built a protected bike lane, compared to much smaller growth in areas without bike upgrades. People who bike also take up less space than those who drive, which lowers the cost of parking and development. More people biking means fewer cars and healthier people, which can save businesses money on health care and boost productivity.

Cascade Bicycle Club is excited about the safety and economic boost the RapidRide J Line can bring to the Eastlake neighborhood. This Bike Everywhere Month let’s come together to celebrate new bike lanes, stronger connections, and a shared vision of making Seattle a place where everyone, from commuters to customers, can ride safely and easily. Let’s keep building a community that works better for businesses and people who bike alike."
