News from the City of Orlando
** October 18, 2024
------------------------------------------------------------
Hey boo, we did it! We survived the last few weeks. However, does anyone else feel like we’re actually in a time-warp and it’s really been a whole year? In case no one else has told you, you should be proud of your courage and resiliency during said time-warp.
With some major tropical outbreaks behind us and more festive times ahead of us, trick-o-treat yo’self with some much-needed rest, fun, and gourds of love. It’s boo-gie time.

------------------------------------------------------------
So yes, some of us are still digging out from the storm. To help out, we sent an email yesterday with some reminders, updates and tips on how all of us can get past this recovery stage faster. Our debris collection is picking up steam and we’re on our way to “back to normal.”

** Witch, please!
------------------------------------------------------------
We’re celebrating 20 years of Come Out With Pride this weekend! You’ll be hard pressed to find a more colorful and welcoming event anywhere in Orlando. With this year’s theme of “Colors of Courage,” make sure you find a good spot for the parade. The City of Orlando float has been labeled The City Courageous and we’re ready to show our love to the community with bright colors, stickers, candy and more fun surprises.
See you at Lake Eola Park on Saturday. Events start at 12 p.m. and the parade starts at 4 p.m. (and note, there’s a NEW parade route). Get road closure info here (https://gis.orlando.gov/portal/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=e00a9f5c295644ea91c1b01cc4e0b178&utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=829fdd767d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-829fdd767d-80648119&mc_cid=829fdd767d&mc_eid=UNIQID) .

** Making Orlando Spook-tacular
------------------------------------------------------------
Over the next few years, creating people-oriented streets and park spaces that better serve residents, visitors and businesses will help every person find themselves in our downtown. This week, Mayor Dyer announced our DTO Action Plan during his annual State of Downtown Address (https://youtube.com/live/GvZIxFQPI5c?feature=share&utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=829fdd767d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-829fdd767d-80648119&mc_cid=829fdd767d&mc_eid=UNIQID) . This plan will transform areas like Magnolia Avenue, Orange Avenue, Lake Lucerne and Church Street to ensure they are walkable and easily accessible for restaurants and retailers. Anchored by the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Magnolia Avenue will change from a one –way to a two-way street with wide sidewalks, pedestrian-friendly amenities, attracting more retail and restaurant options. Likewise, by converting Orange Avenue to a two-way street, we will add more curbside uses such as parking, pick-up and drop-off zones, outdoor dining areas and gathering spaces. And, by adding jogging paths, a boardwalk and playgrounds, Lake Lucerne will become a
leisure destination. Church Street will again serve as a gathering place and festival street for all kinds of events.
These are big, long-term projects that will help reshape our urban core, and make it more vibrant and interesting while creating a downtown for everyone. On Monday, the Orlando City Council will hear more about the plan during the City Council Workshop (https://www.orlando.gov/Our-Government/Mayor-City-Council/City-Council-Meetings/Watch-Council-Online?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=829fdd767d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-829fdd767d-80648119&mc_cid=829fdd767d&mc_eid=UNIQID) at 10 a.m.

** This is just my resting witch face
------------------------------------------------------------
We’re beyond thrilled with the recent success of our Orlando Lakes Cleanup events. With more than 630 volunteers, we cleaned up 2,194 pounds of trash during the six cleanup events! Orlando City Soccer players, Kingston joined volunteers kayaking and SCUBA diving, and City of Orlando team members, we pulled a few bikes and even some 8' tables out of the lakes. Food and beverage single-use plastics, especially plastic drink bottles, Styrofoam cups and take out containers were the most collected items. Keep Orlando Beautiful is now working directly with local restaurants to help them reduce their plastic waste and implement recycling to help reduce this type of pollution. You can help by asking your favorite restaurant in town to consider phasing out Styrofoam and/or plastic drink bottles. You can also email keeporlandobeautiful@orlando.gov (mailto:keeporlandobeautiful@orlando.gov) with restaurant recommendations.
Sign up for other clean up events (https://www.orlando.gov/Our-Government/Departments-Offices/Public-Works/Streets-and-Stormwater-Division/Keep-Orlando-Beautiful?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=829fdd767d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-829fdd767d-80648119&mc_cid=829fdd767d&mc_eid=UNIQID)

** Witch way to the latte
------------------------------------------------------------
We’re in the season of comforting warm mugs of coffee on a crisp fall morning, and Gus Torres of Orlando Coffee Roasters wants to make sure you’ve got your locally roasted coffee stash ready. In Hispanic culture, it’s common to begin drinking coffee at a young age, which gave Gus a head start on his appreciation and knowledge of the world’s favorite bean. Gus spent much of his youth working in the food industry, but later became a truck driver to meet the needs of his growing family. During his travel he made a point to stop at local coffee roasters to purchase coffee to take home to his family. One morning when he was making a delivery, he stumbled across the newly opened Orlando Coffee Roasters. Having developed a close friendship with the owner and appreciation of his products, it was a no brainer for Gus to purchase the business when the original owner needed to move home to Panama to care for his own family. In September of 2006, Gus and his wife Meraly became the owners of Orlando
Coffee Roasters, carrying on the original owner’s minority, family-owned business model. In the nearly 20 years since becoming the owner of a coffee roasting business, the coffee industry has evolved drastically, allowing Gus the unique opportunity to enjoy continuous education and training to best serve his customers. Today, residents can visit Orlando Coffee Roasters at 1401 West Gore Street, #3 to buy both bagged coffee or a custom-made drink to-go. Visit orlandocoffeeroasters.com to learn more.
