** Spartan Appreciation Day at the East Lansing Farmers Market This Sunday
------------------------------------------------------------
The East Lansing Farmers Market (ELFM), 280 Valley Court, will host a Spartan Appreciation Day on Sunday, Sept. 17 to recognize the City’s special relationship with Michigan State University (MSU) and welcome its students to the community. The ELFM runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Spartan Appreciation Day will include two live music performances. Jazz artist Christopher Minami will perform from 10-11:50 a.m. and the School of Rock House Band will perform from 12:10-2 p.m. Sara Joy Yoga will offer yoga in the park at 11 a.m., courtesy of the MSU Office of Community and Student Relations’ Spartan Ambassadors program. Community members are encouraged to bring a yoga mat and visit with the Spartan Ambassadors while at the market. Additionally, MSU’s beloved mascot, Sparty, will make a special appearance at the market at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Parking for ELFM marketgoers is available for free at the meters in front of the park on Valley Court, at the spaces reserved for Valley Court Community Center on Hillside Court and at two-hour spaces along Oakhill Avenue above the park. Free parking is also available in the parking lot at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road and in downtown public parking structures, which are free on Sundays and holidays. ** Downtown East Lansing Installs String Lights in 400 Block Alleyway
------------------------------------------------------------
The City of East Lansing is pleased to announce a new lighting project that was recently installed in the 400 block alleyway of downtown East Lansing from Charles Street to Division Street, between the businesses that front Grand River Avenue and those on Albert Avenue. The new string lights increase safety for visitors and residents of the downtown area as well as contributing to the beautification of downtown East Lansing.
“We love the new lights that were installed in the alley of the 400 block on Grand River. It has completely transformed the area, and along with the recent planter painting, the alley feels quite festive and vibrant,” said Student Book Store co-owner Greg Ballein.
The majority of the funding for this project came from the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) as well as the Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU). Special thanks to Chris Richert of the State News and Greg and Brad Ballein of Student Book Store for their support of this project.
** ELPD Issues Reminders About Important Ordinances
------------------------------------------------------------
The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) wants to ensure that all community members, including new and returning students at Michigan State University (MSU) and visitors to campus, are aware of important public safety information this fall. Community members can expect to see ELPD as well as other law enforcement agencies patrolling the downtown area during busy time periods in the City, particularly weekends with home football games at MSU. Officers will be available to engage with people in a variety of ways, including on foot, on bike and in patrol cars. In addition to providing a reassuring presence for community members, officers from ELPD and their partners will be enforcing violations of City ordinances. It is important for community members and visitors to be aware of the following:
* Open alcohol containers and marihuana smoking are NOT allowed in any public spaces throughout the City or in the downtown area.
* Minors under the age of 21 are not allowed to consume or possess alcohol or marihuana.
* Anyone who is in medical distress, or a person accompanying them, can seek medical help without risk of penalty under medical amnesty, including those who are under age 21.
* Noise violations may incur significant additional penalties if they occur at a party with amplified sound, that charges for entry and/or has a common source of alcohol such as a keg.

** MSU Homecoming Parade Next Weekend (Sept. 22); Theme is Coming Home
------------------------------------------------------------
Community members are encouraged to suit up in their best Michigan State University (MSU) green-and-white gear to line the streets of East Lansing for the MSU Homecoming parade next Friday, Sept. 22! The parade will depart from the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), 819 Abbot Road at 6 p.m. Please note that the ELHCC will close at noon that day to accommodate parade staging in the facility's parking lot.
The parade travels from the Abbot-Burcham intersection south to Grand River Avenue, then east to Farm Lane where the parade will turn onto the MSU campus, ending at the intersection of Farm and Shaw lanes. This year's Homecoming theme is Coming Home and the Grand Marshal is Molly Brennan. Molly is a Spartan with both academic and athletic legacies. She was an engineering group manager for General Motors, where she won the first World Solar Challenge, setting four solar and electric land speed records in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Community members are also invited to participate in MSU’s “Glow Green” tradition by swapping out their front porch, window, room or any other light that can “glow” with a green bulb to show their Spartan spirit.
*Note: East Lansing High School's Homecoming Parade and football game against Everett High School will be held on Friday, Sept. 29.
The East Lansing City Clerk's Office will host two sessions of Precincts, Pollbooks & Proposals: An East Lansing Community Conversation Around Elections at the East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbot Road on Oct. 2 from noon-2 p.m. and on Oct. 5 from 7-9 p.m. The Clerk's Office will also have applications for election inspectors, absentee voter (AV) ballots, voter registration information and more available at the events. Those who are interested should RSVP to mwicks@cityofeastlansing.com (mailto:mwicks@cityofeastlansing.com) and indicate which session they prefer to attend. For more information about elections and voting, visit the City's Election Information page. (https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/192/Election-Info)
