CITY OF HERMOSA BEACH TO HOST FILM SCREENING OF WADE IN THE WATER: A JOURNEY INTO BLACK SURFING AND AQUATIC CULTURE

Screening is Free to the Public & Will Be Held at Hermosa Beach Community Theater
Post Date: 06/10/2024 4:00 PM

The City of Hermosa Beach will screen the award-winning documentary "Wade in the Water: A Journey into Black Surfing and Aquatic Culture" at the Hermosa Beach Community Theater (710 Pier Ave, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254) on Thursday, June 13 at 5:30 p.m. Members of the public are welcome to attend the free event.

From its world-famous beaches to the City’s Surfers Walk of Fame [ https://www.hermosabeach.gov/our-government/city-departments/community-resources-parks-recreation/surfer-s-walk-of-fame?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], Hermosa Beach has long been recognized as a hub for surfing and surf culture in Southern California. The film, which will be followed by a panel discussion that further explores its themes, examines the 1,000-year-old tradition of Black surfing and invites viewers to discover the untold stories of Black surfing legends. The ultimate intention of the project is to inspire and support the next generation of surfers, specifically Black youth, by connecting them to the powerful roots of Black surfing’s legacy.

“"Wade in the Water "reminds us of the importance of dialogue and action towards a more inclusive future – especially in a sport so intertwined with Hermosa Beach’s history and culture,” said Mayor Justin Massey. “This is a great opportunity for our community to learn about the impact and influence of surfers of color and continue to grow a sport we love.”

Mayor Massey will moderate a panel discussion after the film screening to explore topics from competitive surfing to the evolution of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) surfing, and how cities like Hermosa, and our surfing community, can help foster inclusive communities. Panelists will include Hermosa Beach Councilmember Ray Jackson; Greg Rachel (Co-Founder, Black Surfers Collective); Sharon Schaffer (First Black Woman Pro Surfer); Kris Primacio (CEO, International Surf Therapy Organization); Vipe Desai (Executive, Surf Industry Manufacturers Association); Jani Lange (Parks, Recreation, and Community Resources Advisory Commissioner and South Bay Boardriders Club Board Member); and Captain Remy Smith (LA County Fire Department, Lifeguard Division).

All members of the Hermosa Beach community and beyond are invited to partake in this special evening and ask questions during the discussion panel.
