Hot Weather Continues: Safety Resources, Cooling Centers & More Housing Updates: Downtown Housing Area Plan Community Open House, Rental Registry Launched, Notice of Funding Availability Released Festive Fall Fun & Community Engagement Police Equipment Community Meeting – AB 481 Citywide Updates   City of Palo Alto and Palo Alto Unified School District Agree on Steps Toward Cubberley Purchase The City and the Palo Alto Unified School District announced today alignment on steps forward Cubberley purchase for a new community center. Upon voter approval of a General Obligation Bond to fund acquisition and development of the Cubberley site in November 2026, the City will purchase 7 acres from PAUSD at the price of $65.5 million. PAUSD will use sale proceeds for school improvements throughout the district. Prior to going to the voters, the City will develop its plan for a rebuilt and renovated community center and related uses on the site, and PAUSD will develop its school improvement plans. In the interim, the City and PAUSD will solidify a new five-year lease continuing current use of the property, including the playing fields and parking lots. Read the full announcement.   Palo Alto Community Survey – Deadline Extended! The Palo Alto Community Survey deadline has been extended to Monday, October 21. The 2024 Palo Alto Community Survey was initially sent via mail to a sample of Palo Alto households and is now open to all residents online. If you received the survey in the mail, please complete that survey or use the unique link you received to take it online. The survey is an opportunity for Palo Alto residents to provide input on current services, programs, and unmet needs and priorities. Thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts and perspectives. Hot Weather Continues: Safety Resources, Cooling Centers & More The National Weather Service extended an Excessive Heat Warning through 11 p.m. Friday, October 4 with Major Heat Risk. The heat is expected to continue into the weekend. Due to dry conditions, there is an increased fire weather danger for inland areas and higher elevations, including areas west of U.S. Highway 280 in the Palo Alto Foothills. Housing Updates: Downtown Housing Plan Community Open House, Rental Registry Launched, Notice of Funding Availability Downtown Housing Plan Community Open House: Join us on October 10 from 6-8 p.m. for an open house style meeting to share your ideas and priorities for housing downtown. Feedback gained will help inform the Downtown Housing Plan development. The City's Rental Registry Launched This Week: Data collected from the City’s Rental Registry will help the City better understand Palo Alto's rental landscape. The Rental Registry is now live and property owners with three or more residential rental units must register. Notice of Funding Availability Released: Building on the City's housing priorities and policies, a Notice of Funding Availability was released for approximately $5 million in local and state-awarded funds available to support a range of affordable housing developments. No new equipment will be acquired this year. Ask questions, provide feedback, and learn more about the equipment already authorized by City Council. Be Well Free COVID-19 Tests: One way to prepare for flu and COVID-19 season is by ordering free COVID-19 test kits. COVIDtests.gov is providing 4 additional home COVID-19 test kits per household; stay up to date on flu and COVID-19 vaccinations per the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention recommendations. Healthy in Hot Weather: Not feeling hungry in this heat and feeling tired from evening heat while you sleep? Hot weather can decrease your appetite and disrupt regular sleep patterns. One way to stay hydrated if through foods like melons and cucumbers, or build a cool sleep environment by putting ice behind a fan to blow cool air if you don’t have A/C. Beat the Heat: Practice hot weather safety, be prepared for potential power outages, and more. All Palo Alto City Library branches serve as cooling centers during their normal business hours: Children’s Library, College Terrace Library, Downtown Library, Mitchell Park Library, and Rinconada Library.
