Vonda Shepard will hit the stage with her all-star band as she returns to The Smith Center. The performance will feature songs from her new album, Red Light, Green Light, as well as her classic originals, “Maryland,” “Baby, Don’t You Break My Heart Slow,” and many more. They will also play some of the “Ally McBeal” faves, of course! This is an incredibly soulful and dynamic show, featuring James Ralston on guitar (Tina Turner, 22 years!), Jim Hanson on bass (Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen!) and a very special guest, Paul Taylor on drums (currently playing percussion with Crowded House!). Vonda has sold over twelve million albums, has won two Golden Globe Awards, two Emmys and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Billboard Award for selling the most television soundtrack albums in history.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock is a two-act musical based on the hit movie. It follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight–A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out?

Lloyd Webber produced the stage musical on Broadway and in the West End, penning 14 new numbers for the show, which additionally features all of the original songs from the movie. The show is a loving testimony to the transforming power of music.

Aimed at connecting our diverse community through our shared appreciation of music, the Center for Musical Arts’ 2023-24 concert series celebrates musical excellence and an expansive mix of musical genres—all in our welcoming and intimate performance space.

Drawing from the music of Django Reinhardt and the “hot club” style of early 20th century jazz, LaPompe performs a fresh collection of classics and original compositions. Presenting complex and virtuosic arrangements with rustic and acoustic instrumentation including acoustic guitars, upright bass, violin, they have described themselves as “mountain swing” — the kind of music that fits as well in a log cabin as it does in a speakeasy or on the big stage.

Joe Bonamassa is one of today's top live performers. His enthusiastic shows are one of the biggest parts of his career, and a favorite for music lovers worldwide. Hailed internationally as one of the greatest guitar players of his generation and cited by Guitar World Magazine as “the world's biggest blues guitarist,” Bonamassa has almost single-handedly redefined the blues-rock genre and brought it into the mainstream.

Meet Charles Lewis, a living Phoenix jazz legend, at ASU Kerr's restored 1899 Steinway grand piano! He's bringing his fabulous friends and they'll offer up their full, rich, six-man sound that includes horns, percussion, guitar and more. Experience Latin jazz at the hands of a beloved and talented Phoenix bandleader with beautiful history in the Valley as a dancer, jazz player and spiritual touchstone. As always, Lewis will share personal tales and experiences about ASU Kerr namesake Louise Lincoln Kerr.

The gently rhythmic soundscapes of Quarteto Nuevo are driven by soprano saxophone, woodwinds, cello, guitar and percussion. You can be a part of their enchanting live concert recording of their "Jazz Road Suite" at ASU Kerr! This performance is a unique tribute to the American West, drawing inspiration from the landscapes of Arizona, Alaska, California, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming. This chamber jazz quartet with a global influence skillfully weaves together music from ancient cultures and distant corners of the world, creating a dreamy, captivating groove and energy.
