Etienne Charles triumphed when his illuminating San Juan Hill: A New York Story was presented by the New York Philharmonic to reopen David Geffen Hall, cementing his reputation for creating meaningful multimedia works connecting music with place and history.

For Unsilent Spring, Etienne Charles unveils his newest multimedia creation, Earth Tones. Employing sounds, stories, images and film and incorporating musical idioms from at-risk coastal communities, Charles invites us into a sensory journey among mangrove swamps, coral reefs, oyster beds, seagrass, sand dunes and mud volcanoes. With contributions from musicians from the very communities most at risk from the effects of climate change, Earth Tones promises to be a powerful and unique one-night-only event.

Welcome to the edge of your seat. You’ll be transported to another time with Tchaikovsky’s revolutionary fifth symphony. Known for his timeless and well-loved melodies from works like Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake, you’ll see why Tchaikovsky’s symphonies are some of the most performed around the world. One of the most sublime themes in film music, Gabriel’s Oboe from The Mission, is brought to life on our stage by our fabulous principal oboist, Torrence Welch. You’ll also hear a piece never before heard by young composer Michael Faire, the first in our series of featured compositions by living, emerging composers from our area.

Alisa Weilerstein plays the Seattle Symphony premiere of Lutoslawski’s Cello Concerto, a transcendent work composed in 1970. The trailblazing Shiyeon Sung, who has made headlines as the first female conductor from South Korea to reach the international stage, leads the orchestra through the program, which also includes Dvorak’s luminous Sixth Symphony.

Jazz pianist and composer Hiromi is a spark plug of creative energy and melodic ingenuity. From her debut album to her 2021 performance at the opening ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympics, Hiromi has electrified audiences and earned the deep respect of jazz icons like Ahmad Jamal, Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke. Her live performances are legendary for their energy and jaw-dropping improvisation. For this Mondavi Center debut she’ll be working her new quartet, sonicwonder, whose new album is forthcoming in fall 2023.

Led by acclaimed violinist Jeremy Kittel, formerly of the Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet, Kittel & Co. fuses classical and acoustic roots, Celtic and bluegrass aesthetics, and folk and jazz sensibilities.

Schubert balances entertainment and ambition in his writing through jaunty dances, hummable tunes, and heart-rending moments. Like Beethoven’s Septet, these elements are married with virtuosic moments led by the first violinist and clarinetist. The Octet in F major is the largest of Schubert’s chamber works in instrumentation and duration.

Brit Floyd returns to the stage in 2024 with P·U·L·S·E, their biggest and most spectacular production to date, a celebration and faithful recreation of Pink Floyd’s legendary final Division Bell tour, complete with a stunning laser and light show, iconic circular screen, inflatables and theatrics.

For more than 50 years, Jordi Savall, one of the most versatile musical personalities of his generation, has rescued musical gems from the obscurity of neglect and oblivion and given them back for all to enjoy. A tireless researcher into early music, he interprets and performs the repertory both as a gambist and a conductor. This program, featuring his acclaimed ensemble Hespèrion XXI, captures the inventiveness of the early Baroque era, including works by Frescobaldi, Kapsberger, de’ Cavalieri, Falconiero and more. As the critic Allan Kozinn wrote in The New York Times, Savall’s vast concert and recording career can be described as “not simply a matter of revival, but of imaginative reanimation.”

A live documentary accopanied by the Kronos Quartet unspools the group’s groundbreaking multi-decade career. Offer applies to Price Levels 2-9 only (Regular ticket type).

We'll head to the McCoy for the 7:30pm Branford Marsalis concert, then enjoy dessert and a champagne toast post-concert from 9-10pm.
