News from the City of Orlando
** December 20, 2024
------------------------------------------------------------
It’s the season of eating our feelings, smothering those we love, and taking some time to digest 2024. And although we’d like to tell you that, “we listen and we don’t judge” we’re more like Santa - we see you when you’re pouring grease down your drain (https://www.orlando.gov/Trash-Recycling/Return-Your-Cooking-Oil-Recycling-Container?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=a37bb5be28-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-a37bb5be28-80648119&mc_cid=a37bb5be28&mc_eid=UNIQID) , wish-cycling that thing that you think should be recyclable (https://www.orlando.gov/Events/Holiday-Light-Recycling-Pilot?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=a37bb5be28-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-a37bb5be28-80648119&mc_cid=a37bb5be28&mc_eid=UNIQID) and just generally being a Grinch about things like parking downtown (https://www.downtownorlando.com/Parking-Getting-Around/Parking/parkdto?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=a37bb5be28-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-a37bb5be28-80648119&mc_cid=a37bb5be28&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
But fear not! We've got the answers to some of those holiday woes and we’re here to bring you holiday cheer as we wrap up the year. Plus, this is the last City News of 2024, and we would like to end on a warm and fuzzy note.
Happy holidays to all our Orlandoans. We wish you all peace and love for the new year!

** Mission: Christmas was a success
------------------------------------------------------------
This year, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer's Veterans Advisory Council, in partnership with Heart of Florida United Way, brought holiday cheer to local veteran families through "Mission: Christmas."
Inspired by Council Chair Michael Adams' own experience receiving a surprise Christmas as a child, the council rallied to provide over 130 gifts, two Christmas trees, and even 10 beds and mattresses for 11 deserving children.
We believe every child deserves a magical Christmas, and we're so grateful to have made that a reality for these families. A huge thank you to our incredible partners who made this possible including Orange County, Florida Government Veterans Advisory Council, Mission United: Heart of FL United Way, Kappa Episilon Psi Military Sorority Inc, Central Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Blevins & Adams Law Group.

** It’s Buddy Claus!
------------------------------------------------------------
Every holiday season, Mayor Dyer dons a Santa suit and reads a story to the kids of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida. In partnership with Mike Bianchi and the crew at 96.9 The Game, we help raise funds for this non-profit, which provides vital programs helping young residents grow and thrive in our community.

** For those lost, but not forgotten
------------------------------------------------------------
This week, our city honored those who passed away over the last year at the annual iDignity Homeless Memorial Service. As each of their names were read aloud, we remember that each person was an individual, with their own stories, experiences and challenges.
We continue our community’s collective work to provide support to our most vulnerable neighbors, working to get those living on the streets into shelters and permanent housing and supporting them on their way forward.

** Calling all baby fashionistas
------------------------------------------------------------
Whether you’re the momma or dada, cool aunt or funcle, grandparent or friend, Yaya + Lou is the place to go to find the most precious pieces of children’s clothing, toys and books for your pint-sized BFF.
College Park momma of two Chelsea Santos has known she wanted to own her own retail, fashion-focused shop since she was young, but it wasn’t until she had children that she began to see the opportunity to open a locally owned businesses dedicated to children’s fashion. In 2018, Chelsea moved to College Park, where coincidentally enough, there was a vacant storefront available right along Edgewater Drive that she joked would one day be the home of her children’s clothing store. Just one year later in 2019, that space was hers and lovingly named after her own babies.
Chelsea hand selects every brand and item sold in Yaya + Lou. Rather than buying from one or two large wholesalers, Chelsea researches individual brands around the world and connects with each to source the products she sells in-store. Additionally, Yaya + Lou offers a section of the store dedicated to gently used, secondhand children’s clothing and accessories.
So, if you’re looking for a place to shop and leave knowing you’ll have the most stylish babe on the block, head to Yaya + Lou at 2318 Edgewater Drive, or visit yayaandlou.com (https://www.yayaandlou.com/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=a37bb5be28-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-a37bb5be28-80648119&mc_cid=a37bb5be28&mc_eid=UNIQID) to learn more.
