View as Webpage   What's New Mitchell Park Library & Community Center 10th Anniversary Celebration is Saturday Storm Readiness: Advancing Flood Protection Projects & Resident Reminders Help Inform County Effort on Affordable Housing, Homelessness and Community Development Funding Priorities Weekly City Manager Updates: November 12, 2024 Citywide Updates Mitchell Park Library & Community Center 10th Anniversary Celebration is Saturday Celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the spectacular Mitchell Park Library and Community Center! Festivities include speeches, architectural tours, performances and other activities that highlight how this popular joint facility is used daily by Palo Alto residents and surrounding communities. The library will also give out commemorative library cards while supplies last and are available for new card signups and existing PACL cardholders to exchange. Join us for the celebration this Saturday, November 16, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Storm Readiness: Advancing Flood Protection Projects & Resident Reminders November marks the beginning of our rainy season and a new update shares City steps taken to ensure storm drains and creeks are working properly, updates about advancing the construction of the Newell Road Bridge Replacement project and additional City planning underway. Plus, find five reminders to help prepare for possible storm impacts. Help Inform County Effort on Affordable Housing, Homelessness and Community Development Funding Priorities Consolidated Plans are documents that help local governments and states assess their community development and affordable housing needs. It also helps make data-driven decisions about where to invest resources and is a federal requirement to receive funding. Updated every 5 years, the Santa Clara County is planning this effort along with eight cities and towns including Palo Alto, to increase awareness of and participation in the process. Join a virtual workshop on November 20 or take an online survey to share perspectives on community needs. Weekly City Manager Updates: November 12  City Manager Ed Shikada shares brief updates at each Council meeting, highlighting events, City services, and Council discussions planned. Catch up on the latest City issues and news through our Palo Alto Connect Medium.com series. Participate in the Consolidated Plan update and the City’s planning effort for the Downtown Area Housing Plan. Plus, learn about upcoming Council items. Be Well California Respiratory Virus Report: RSV activity is starting to increase. COVID-19 and influenza activity are currently low in California. The most prevalent COVID-19 variant lineages continue to be descendants of JN.1. View the statewide weekly report. Thanksgiving for All: Need help this Thanksgiving or know someone who does? Join community partners for a meal on the day before Thanksgiving with LifeMoves, 33 Encina Street at 12:30 p.m. and on Thanksgiving with the Downtown Streets Team at All Saints Episcopal Church, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Alternatively, let others lean on you by volunteering with LifeMoves to serve food for Thanksgiving meals or organize a donation drive for needed items, or volunteer with the Downtown Streets Team serving food. The Magical Bridge Foundation is also hosting a Friendsgiving event on November 23, tickets are limited. Holiday Stress: This time of year, can be both magical and overwhelming. Try these simple healthy holiday reminders to reduce stress, keep moving and take time for yourself. Recipe of the Week: Embrace fall flavors with this delightful pumpkin baked oatmeal recipe—packed with seasonal ingredients. Prep this comforting breakfast in advance for a grab-and-go option that helps reduce the need for packaged morning bites. Family Resources Native American Heritage Month: Celebrations continue this month honoring the history, culture, and contributions of Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities. Learn about the community by recognizing the land you are on, reading a book or watching a movie, or taking a virtual field trip. Attend a film screening of Bless Me, Ultima on Tuesday, November 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Mitchell Park Library. Kids can weave a Navajo (Diné) mini blanket on Wednesday, November 20 at 3:30 p.m. at Children’s Library. Programs for Teens: High school students and their families can learn about college admission trends and strategies from experts during a virtual presentation, Successfully Navigating College Admissions, on Tuesday, November 19 at 4 p.m. Drop by for a button making pop-up on Thursday, November 21 at 4 p.m. at Mitchell Park Library. Enjoy a holiday meal at the FriendsGiving celebration on Friday, November 22 at 4 p.m. at The Drop Teen Center – Mitchell Park. 3rdThursday on California Avenue: Enjoy live music, eat, and connect with community at the year-round monthly outdoor festival. Happening on Thursday, November 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., this month’s theme is “ThanksCaring.” There will be live music, crafts, food tastings, nonprofit giving, and more. For Pets and Pet Parents: Get pet parenting advice from experts at Project HumaneKind during the Companion Animal Hour happening virtually on Thursday, November 21 at 10 a.m. Bring joy to dogs awaiting adoption by transforming old clothing into pet toys at the Pupcycled: Make a Toy for a Dog in Need drop-in event on Saturday, November 23, 1 – 3 p.m. at Downtown Library.
