Three neighborhood planning workshops set for June For www.mauicounty.gov

May 22, 2024

The County of Maui Office of Recovery and Department of Planning will hold three neighborhood planning workshops in June for residents to share their thoughts on topics specific to the areas with county staff.

The workshops are scheduled for June 1, 15 and 29, 2024, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at Lahainaluna High School cafeteria, 980 Lahainaluna Road, Lahaina.

The workshops are as follows:

- Lahaina Town North Neighborhood Planning Workshop on Saturday, June 1. This workshop is for residents in the area north of Lahainaluna Road, including Keawe Camp and Māla.
- Lahaina Town South Neighborhood Planning Workshop on Saturday, June 15. This workshop is for residents in the area south of Lahainaluna Road, including Shark Pit and Puamana.
- Historic and Business Districts Planning Workshop on Saturday, June 29. This workshop will address the historic and business districts and is an opportunity for members of the Lahaina community to share their thoughts on the future of this area.

Doors open at 2:30 p.m., and the workshops will begin at 3 p.m. Snacks and children’s activities will be provided.

There will be language interpreters on site (ASL, Hawaiian, Ilocano, Spanish, Tagalog, Tongan). Due to limited parking, carpooling is strongly recommended. Parking close to the venue will be reserved for those requiring mobility assistance.

The workshops will help ensure that residents are aware of options for their neighborhood and that the County is aware of community preferences so they can be included in the long-term recovery plan.

These neighborhood workshops will NOT include information for shoreline owners who are wishing to rebuild. The Planning Department will release information about the process for shoreline property owners in mid-June and will offer the opportunity for one-on-one consultations as owners navigate the process.

The Office of Recovery prioritizes community engagement for the long-term recovery plan for Lahaina. The purpose of community engagement, such as these workshops, is to collaborate with residents on their vision for recovery, which will lead to a long-term recovery plan of projects to address damages from the August 2023 fire. The recovery plan will include projects and funding, and will guide recovery in a sustainable and resilient manner.

Previous planning workshops were held for the Kelawea Mauka and Wahikuli neighborhoods. An online neighborhood planning workshop is also being developed. Please visit https://www.MauiRecovers.org for updates.
