Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision (Second Update) For www.mauicounty.gov

SECOND UPDATE:

The Maui Police Department Vehicle Homicide Crash Investigators are looking for the vehicle involved in the fatal hit and run of Mr. Jesus Mettao that occurred on Monday, May 27, 2024, at approximately 2:46 a.m., on Lono Avenue in Kahului. Please see the depicted photos of the suspected vehicle, a red sedan.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Cody Tetzloff of the Maui Police Department Traffic Division/Vehicular Homicide Unit at (808)244-6363.

UPDATE:

The victim has been identified as Jesus Mettao (57) who is known to frequent the Kahului area. The Maui Police Department extends our deepest condolences to Mr. Mettao’s family and friends.

ORIGINAL:

On Monday, May 27, 2024, at approximately 3:10 a.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred at Lono Avenue, 165 feet southeast of Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a 57-year-old male, known to frequent the Kahului area, was lying in the roadway when an unknown vehicle drove over him as it traveled southwest on Lono Avenue towards Kaahumanu Avenue. The unknown vehicle did not stop or render aid and fled the scene in an unknown direction.

As a result, the 57-year-old male succumbed to his injuries on the scene. (The victim’s identity is being withheld for 24 hours to allow his family an opportunity to notify their extended family and friends).

Investigation reveals that:

The involvement of speed, alcohol, or drugs has yet to be determined as the investigation remains ongoing.

At this time, Maui Police Department Vehicular Homicide Unit investigators are working diligently to identify the vehicle and operator that fled the scene.

This is Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality of 2024 as compared to five at the same time last year.
