News from the City of Orlando
** May 24, 2024
------------------------------------------------------------
Today may be the last day for the 2023-2024 school year for Orange County Public Schools, but does learning ever really stop? Whether you’re young or old, there’s always something to absorb, contemplate and share with your tribe. And now since we got algebra class out of our way (at least for the summer), we can all learn a little about things that are a bit more practical for daily life.
** Celebrating our youth who are already making a difference
------------------------------------------------------------
We had the honor of recognizing 27 incredible high school students from Orange County at the City of Orlando Mayor's Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission Youth Humanitarian Awards Celebration held at SeaWorld.
Each of these students have shown outstanding character by dedicating their time and energy to making a real difference in our community, leading with compassion and a vision for a brighter, more inclusive future.
This year’s celebration was extra special with U.S. Representative Maxwell Alejandro Frost as our keynote speaker. As the first member of Generation Z elected to Congress, his story is a powerful reminder that young people can make a significant impact and lead the way toward change.
Join us in applauding these young humanitarians for their dedication and hard work.

** Teaching a “mature” dog new tricks
------------------------------------------------------------
Whether you’re young or old, recognizing the need to be age-friendly got our city moving toward making improvements for all ages. In 2019, we became an AARP-designated age-friendly community, prioritizing health, economic growth and overall quality of life for all ages.
In 2022, after extensive research, the city approved a comprehensive action plan to address crucial areas like transportation, housing, social participation and health services. Since implementing the action plan, notable achievements include projects such as Fern Grove (https://www.instagram.com/p/Cyi_VXIOn-Z/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=3dd5725678-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-3dd5725678-80648119&mc_cid=3dd5725678&mc_eid=UNIQID) Apartments and the transformation of Baptist Terrace (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6915657449404256256/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=3dd5725678-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-3dd5725678-80648119&mc_cid=3dd5725678&mc_eid=UNIQID) and Kinneret Apartments into more than 600 high-quality, affordable housing units for seniors. The State of Florida is offering a sales tax exemption on qualifying items related to disaster preparedness to help residents prepare for the upcoming hurricane season. The sales tax holiday will take place twice throughout the hurricane season, June 1 through June 14 and August 24 through September 6. The list includes bigger ticket items such as generators and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as other items like flashlights, batteries and supplies for pets. Take advantage of the savings and begin preparing your hurricane kit now.

** Learn to refill, not landfill
------------------------------------------------------------
It’s always a great time to learn how you can incorporate more sustainable, earth-friendly and zero-waste products into your life. One local place where you can learn is Good Fills, where you can fill your shopping bag (reusable of course) with all the things you’ll need.
Good Fills was cofounded by Jennie Lee and Trung Tran, whose main goal was to teach customers to “refill, not landfill” – using their mobile bus and store to refill common household products in reusable containers, rather than sending another plastic bottle to the landfill each time your bottle of dish soap runs dry. Jennie and Trung both experienced moments that left them wanting to do their part to produce less waste in the world. Jennie was touring caves and glaciers and learned the glaciers had shrunk significantly due to pollutants caused by everyday waste and trash. Trung’s experience was closer to home, while visiting his parents he saw that that the two of them combined were creating less waste than he was. With their shared vision, the two set out to open their mobile refill van, which sells reusable containers, and all the normal household products you could think of, including detergent, dish soap, surface cleaners, and even self-care products like soap, hair products and more.
The best part? If you have your own containers you like to use, bring them on over! Jennie and Trung encourage the use of your favorite existing containers. Just bring your container to their van or brick and mortar store, and they’ll fill it up for you. Jennie and Trung can be found at the Audubon Park Community Market every Monday evening, or you can visit their shop at 2497 Coolidge Avenue. On their website, goodfills.co (https://goodfills.co/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=3dd5725678-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-3dd5725678-80648119&mc_cid=3dd5725678&mc_eid=UNIQID) , you can also find a calendar which lists other farmers markets or events around town they’ll be at that week.
