City of Mountain View Firefighters respond to a call for smoke in the walls of a home

Smoke Reported in a Multi-Family Housing Complex in the 200 Block of Horizon Avenue

On Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 10:10 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting smoke coming from the walls of a condominium in a two-story multi-family housing complex in the 200 block of Horizon Avenue. The occupants of the condominium self-evacuated before fire crews arrived on the scene.

City of Mountain View Fire Department units were dispatched at 10:11 a.m. and the first engine company arrived on the scene at 10:16 a.m. The first engine on the scene arrived to find a power strip had failed and was the source of the smoke smell.

Firefighters disconnected the appliances plugged into the power strip, revealing corrosion and charring. The power strip was subject to moisture, which led to its failure.

The incident was resolved with no injuries. The occupant was allowed to return to their condominium before fire crews left the scene.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, relocatable power strips shall meet the qualifications of the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Standard for Relocatable Power Taps 1363, or UL 1363A, Outline of Investigation for Special Purpose Relocatable Power Taps, where applicable. Relocatable power strips shall be directly connected to a permanently installed receptacle. Finally, relocatable power strip cords shall not extend through walls, ceilings, or floors, under doors or floor coverings, or be subject to environmental or physical damage.
