News from the City of Orlando

** June 21, 2024
------------------------------------------------------------

While school may be out, it’s always a good time to learn something! We’ve got some interesting news that shows how our municipal government works and how residents and businesses can be a part of it. How have you been involved lately?

** District 5 has a new interim commissioner
------------------------------------------------------------

This morning, the Orange County Supervisor of Elections finalized and called the District 5 Interim City Commissioner Special Election. Please joining us in welcoming Commissioner Shaniqua “Shan” Rose to the Orlando City Council.

On Monday, June 24, at 10 a.m., Commissioner Rose will take the Oath of Office and attend her first City Council meeting.

The Oath of Office reaffirms an elected official’s commitment to faithfully perform the outlined duties according to the District City Commissioner role within the City of Orlando. The City of Orlando’s Charter requires City Commissioners to recite the Oath before they enter the duties of office.

** Here's to 50 Years!
------------------------------------------------------------

We’re not exaggerating when we say we’ve got more than 100 parks with centuries of history to celebrate. One of those parks is Hankins Park, which turns 50 this year. In 1974 it was dedicated to Dr. I. Sylvester Hankins, a prominent physician and civil rights advocate for Black Orlando residents. On Tuesday, recreation staff and children from Hankins Neighborhood Center gathered for cake and camaraderie (https://www.instagram.com/orlandofpr/p/C8cnVskRqpc/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=34ca7c6f01-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-34ca7c6f01-80648119&mc_cid=34ca7c6f01&mc_eid=UNIQID) , because what’s an anniversary without a sweet treat?

For the last five decades, it’s still one of our favorite parks for all ages. While it has your typical amenities like pavilions and a playground for the little ones, there’s also fields and courts onsite for sports like softball, tennis and basketball. Stop by Hankins Park (https://www.orlando.gov/Parks-the-Environment/Directory/Hankins-Park-Neighborhood-Center?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=34ca7c6f01-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-34ca7c6f01-80648119&mc_cid=34ca7c6f01&mc_eid=UNIQID) this summer!

** When a bet becomes a small business
------------------------------------------------------------

What if we told you one of Orlando’s yoga studios opened after one friend lost a friendly bet to the other, and had to attend her first yoga class as a result? That’s right, Katie Donzanti, owner of Peaceful Peacock Orlando, never saw yoga being a part of her future or envisioned opening her own business, and in her own words, was a chronic workaholic.

Prior to attending her first yoga class, Katie spent 20 years in a successful digital marketing career. While her work was exciting and paid her bills, she spent many of those years feeling unfulfilled and burnt out. After completing her first yoga class, Katie could not believe the impact yoga as exercise, but also a holistic lifestyle, had on the quality of her life. After receiving a bonus from her digital marketing job, Katie took a leap, left the security of corporate life, and invested those funds into opening Peaceful Peacock Orlando in 2017, an affordable and accessible yoga studio, something she felt was lacking at the time.

Seven years later, Peaceful Peacock Orlando is a staple of the Curry Ford community and beyond. As Katie likes to say, Peaceful Peacock has “grit and staying power,” and she looks forward to many more years spent enhancing the lives of all who call her studio home. To visit Peaceful Peacock Orlando, head to 1700 South Bumby Avenue, or check out peacefulpeacockorlando.com for more information.
