Stay informed Click here to view in your browser. Welcome to our City Newsletter! Greetings! As you are hopping into Easter weekend we want to remind everyone of some park rules and visiting tips. Easter Sunday is the busiest day of the year for parks particularly at our El Dorado East Regional Park. We ask visitors to please respect our park rules and help keep our parks clean. But most importantly, have a lovely Easter weekend with your friends and family. If you are traveling through our Long Beach Airport we also have some friendly reminders to make your traveling experience stress-free. We're only a few weeks away from America's #1 street race, the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach happening April 19-21. To kick-off the amazing weekend the City of Long Beach, in partnership with the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach, is hosting the 2024 Motorsports Walk of Fame, where honorees Katherine Legge and Takuma Sato will be inducted during a public ceremony and you are all invited! El Dorado East Regional Park Offers Tips for Visitors on Easter Sunday, March 31 El Dorado East Regional Park is a popular place to enjoy Easter Sunday with family and friends. In fact, Easter Sunday is the busiest day of the year at El Dorado East Regional Park, which is why we are sharing park rules and visiting tips to help visitors make the most of their day. Click here Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine to Offer Summer Day Camps for Youth, June 17 through August 23 Our Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will offer Summer Aquatics and Park Day Camps from June 17 through August 23, 2024. Registration is open now online at LBParks.org. Youth ages 5 to 12 will enjoy games, crafts, physical fitness, enrichment activities and more. Summer Park Camps will operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., for those enrolled in extended care. The weekly cost is $100 for regular day and $125 for extended care. Click here Long Beach’s Silverado Park Gym Temporarily Closed for Repairs Our Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine’s Silverado Park Gym, is temporarily closed for repairs. The gym recently closed after it was identified that the wooden floor was warped due to exposure from a leaky ceiling and water intrusion from the ground level, believed to be caused by the severe weather systems experienced this winter. Click here Katherine Legge and Takuma Sato to be Inducted into Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame The City of Long Beach, in partnership with the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach, recently announced the honorees for the 2024 Motorsports Walk of Fame, Katherine Legge and Takuma Sato. Legge, a trailblazer among women in motorsports, will be the first female honoree. The honorees will be inducted during a public ceremony taking place Thursday, April 18, ahead of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, April 19-21. Click here Long Beach Airport Advises Travelers to Allow Extra Time Due to Spring Break and Construction Work Long Beach Airport (LGB) is anticipating an elevated number of travelers during the spring break season, from roughly mid-March through early April, and passengers are advised to plan ahead and arrive early—especially in the midst of LGB’s ongoing roadway improvements—to ensure a smooth travel experience. Click here City of Long Beach Begins Construction for Project Homekey at 5950 Long Beach Blvd. We recently celebrated the beginning of renovations for the forthcoming new interim shelter, Project Homekey. This $6.5 million construction project will add to the City’s suite of temporary housing facilities for people experiencing homelessness. This project upgrades 78 units – 12 of which will be ADA accessible – along with common areas and support facilities. All rooms will be renovated with new bathrooms, lighting, and upgraded fixtures and amenities such as laundry facilities, microwaves and refrigerators. This facility will also be outfitted with a new fire sprinkler system, drought tolerant landscaping and ADA access improvements. Click here Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more City Celebrated Long Beach Walk to School Week Our Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services invited students and their families to participate in Long Beach Walk to School Week, which took place March 18 through March 22. Long Beach Walk to School Week emphasizes the importance of increasing physical activity, pedestrian safety, and relieving traffic congestion near school zones. Learn more City of Long Beach Accepting Nominations for Veterans Banner Program The City of Long Beach is accepting nominations for the first-ever Long Beach Honors Veterans banner program. The Department of Health and Human Services Office of Veterans Support and the Long Beach Veterans Commission will oversee the administration of up to 25 banners to be displayed across the city for one year beginning in May 2024. Click here Long Beach Public Library Celebrates 10 Years of Creativity and Innovation at The Studio Makerspace Our Long Beach Public Library is thrilled to announce the anniversary celebration of The Studio Makerspace with a new exhibition, “A 10-Year Retrospective of Art and Maker Innovation," at the Billie Jean King Main Library. Launched in April of 2014, The Studio has become a vibrant hub of creativity and innovation, serving as a dynamic resource for artists and makers of all ages in the Long Beach community. Click here Long Beach Public Library Adds Monday Service Hours at Two More Neighborhood Libraries Our Long Beach Public Library will soon offer expanded service hours at two additional neighborhood library locations, Burnett Library and El Dorado Library, as part of LBPL’s ongoing commitment to enhancing access to library resources and services for the community. Beginning Monday, April 1, 2024, Burnett Library and El Dorado Library will offer an additional day of service on Mondays. This expansion of service is made possible through structural and one-time enhancements to Library Services as approved in the City's Adopted Fiscal Year 2023 Budget by the City Council. Learn more City of Long Beach Launches Sidewalk to Success Program to Support Business Development The City of Long Beach, through the Long Beach Recovery Act, is funding a sidewalk vending support program, “Sidewalk to Success,” to help ease the financial burden for small businesses in the first year of the City’s recently approved Sidewalk Vending Ordinance currently in effect. Read more Long Beach Expands First Time Homebuyer Assistance The City of Long Beach has expanded the City’s First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program that now enables income-eligible residents citywide to apply and increases the grant amount from $20,000 up to $25,000. The expansion of this program, which is for first-time, first-generation homebuyers, is intended to enable more Long Beach residents to qualify and receive assistance to purchase their first home in the city. Click here City to Host Outreach Events in April to Commemorate Community Development Week The City of Long Beach will commemorate 2024 National Community Development Week with several outreach events from April 1-6 to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Learn more Long Beach to Host Virtual Community Meeting on Draft Zoning Regulations for Central Long Beach Area The City of Long Beach Community Development Department will host a virtual community meeting for the public to learn about and provide feedback on the rezoning proposal for the Zone In: City Core project area, developed based on input received and analysis conducted over the project’s multi-year engagement process. As part of the public comment period on the rezoning proposal, which is open through April 22, 2024, a virtual meeting will be held Thursday, April 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Attendees can join online or by phone 213.338.8466. Click here City of Long Beach Launches Electric Bicycle Lending Library Program We recently launched the application period for our Electric Bicycle (E-Bike) Lending Library program, a new initiative that will allow residents to borrow E-bikes for up to three months at no cost. The program will provide education on E-bike technology, encourage E-bike ridership, and promote an active zero-emission mode of travel. In alignment with the City’s focus on equity, the program will allocate 24 of the E-bikes to residents who are enrolled in a qualifying federal or state assistance program and the remaining E-bikes will be available for all Long Beach residents. Click here City of Long Beach Celebrates Earth Month with Events and Educational Campaigns Throughout April We are celebrating Earth Month by hosting a series of fun, free and family-friendly events, workshops and volunteer opportunities for residents throughout April. Festivities will highlight a range of sustainable topics such as supporting local wildlife, reducing waste and stewarding community spaces. Earth Day began in 1970 to bring attention to environmental issues and has since spread to monthlong events and celebrations around the world every April. This year’s Earth Month activities and events are organized around the 2024 theme, Planet vs. Plastics.
