Toronto City Council opts for by-election for Ward 15, Don Valley West

Today, Toronto City Council declared the office of Councillor for Ward 15, Don Valley West vacant and opted for a by-election to fill the vacancy following the passing of Councillor Jaye Robinson on Thursday, May 16.

The by-law requiring a by-election to fill the vacancy will be passed and come into force on Sunday, July 21, resulting in nominations opening on Monday, July 22.

A variety of factors will be considered by the City Clerk when determining voting dates, including holidays, and ensuring adequate time for the preparation of the by-election.

More information about the by-election will be posted over the next few weeks on the Toronto Elections webpage: www.toronto.ca/city-government/elections.

Potential candidates are reminded that under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 (MEA), they cannot incur campaign expenses or accept campaign contributions until after filing nomination papers with the City Clerk. Information about the MEA can be found on the Ontario government's website: www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/90m53.

When a vacancy on City Council occurs, provincial legislation mandates that City Council declare the office vacant at its next meeting or, in the case of a member passing away, at either of its next two meetings. Within 60 days of declaring the office vacant, City Council shall either appoint a person to fill the vacancy or pass a by-law requiring a by-election be held to fill the vacancy.

Until the vacancy is filled, Councillor Robinson's staff remain in place and are available to address constituency matters for residents of Ward 15, Don Valley West. Contact information for the office is available on the City’s Ward 15 webpage: www.toronto.ca/city-government/council/members-of-council/councillor-ward-15.

A recording of today’s meeting is available on the Toronto City Council Live YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/TorontoCityCouncilLive.

The City Clerk’s report is available on the City’s website: https://secure.toronto.ca/council/agenda-item.do?item=2024.CC19.1.
