Keeping up with Kathryn

Nov. 15, 2024

Dear Friends,

It was an all-hands-on-deck effort this week to get more than 70 people housed in Lancaster who had been living on the streets and in the desert. The Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative (https://homeless.lacounty.gov/) 's Pathway Home (https://homeless.lacounty.gov/pathway-home/) program, which cleans up encampments and provides people experiencing homelessness with wraparound supportive services and interim housing, truly works. Our County's partnership with our cities (https://homeless.lacounty.gov/news/pwh-game-changer/) , like the one this week with the City of Lancaster, makes all the difference. Since Pathway Home (https://homeless.lacounty.gov/pathway-home/) began, more than 824 people have been moved into interim housing, 145 people have moved into permanent housing, and more than 538 RVs have been removed from our neighborhoods. If we're going to meaningfully address the crisis on our streets (https://homeless.lacounty.gov/) , we must continue working in lock step with cities
(https://homeless.lacounty.gov/news/pwh-game-changer/) and community partners.

Best wishes,
Kathryn Barger
Supervisor, Fifth District
Meet Harriet, a happy and wiggly one-year-old Australian Kelpie and Labrador Retriever mix, and Sophie, a gentle and shy five-year-old German Shepherd. If you'd like to open your heart and home to a new pet, consider adopting one of them from the Palmdale Animal Care Center, which is open for drop-ins Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Veterans' Pet Services Promotion
In honor of Veterans Day in November, there’s a special promotion for free spay and neuter services for veterans’ pets. Veterans who live in North County—including those in unincorporated areas and the cities of Lancaster, Palmdale, Santa Clarita, and San Fernando—can take their pets to the Simi Valley Non-profit Spay and Neuter Clinic (https://simivalleynonprofitspayandneuter.com/) for free services throughout the entire month of November. Call 805-584-3823 and use the code words “Veteran Veteran” (yes, twice!) when calling to make your appointment.

At the new Los Angeles County Justice Care and Opportunities Department (https://jcod.lacounty.gov/) D.O.O.R.S. site in Lancaster, Antelope Valley residents who’ve left our justice system will have a one stop shop for the resources they need to reintegrate into our communities and set forward on a path to a brighter future. Our new brick-and-mortar facility will ensure people know they have a dedicated space for career, education, mental health, and housing help all in one place. I’m confident that this permanent facility will equip clients to make permanent changes in their lives.

Gone are the days when museums were stuffy, cold, and quiet. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (https://nhm.org/) ’s new NHM Commons (https://nhm.org/nhm-commons) is proof that museums are for connection and community gathering as much as they are education. On Thursday, we got to celebrate this incredible new space, complete with a welcome center, theater, South LA Cafe, Barbara Carrasco’s gorgeous art piece L.A. History: A Mexican Perspective, and a 75-foot dinosaur named Gnatalie.

This week, Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley (https://www.familypromisescv.org/) opened their new resource center! This amazing space will bring needed wraparound services and shelter to families experiencing homelessness as they get back on their feet. I was proud to present them with a check for $500,000, which the City of Santa Clarita matched, to continue the compassionate, effective work they're doing in the SCV for children and parents in need.

Congratulations to Los Angeles' new Police Chief Jim McDonnell, who was sworn in this week! He served our Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department with determination and dignity and I know he'll do the same for the Los Angeles Police Department.

The Building Owners and Managers Association of Greater Los Angeles represents more than 2,000 commercial real estate professionals across Los Angeles County who contribute $3.5 billion to California’s economy every year. I met with their board members yesterday to discuss our shared priorities to tackle homelessness, cut through red tape, and build more sustainably.

Faith-based entities are trusted partners for serving those most in need, especially foster youth and people experiencing homelessness. This week, I sat down with philanthropic leaders for a conversation about how we can better invest in relationships with faith-based groups and knock down hurdles to collaborating with the County.

Thank you to Union Station Homeless Services for inviting me to sit in on your November board meeting to hear about your vision for the year ahead. The County cannot solve this crisis alone. It’s partners like these who are the boots on the ground making a difference every day.

Join us tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. at Jackie Robinson Park (https://parks.lacounty.gov/jackie-robinson-park/) in Sun Village to unveil a beautiful new mural celebrating the community. Named "The Light of Many Suns," the artwork is a fitting tribute to the rich history and vibrant community in Sun Village. Created in close collaboration with local residents, I know the piece will serve as a source of inspiration, beauty, and education for future generations of Antelope Valley residents to celebrate and learn about the people and places that make it so special.
