Set to open in fall 2026, the complex is positioned to become the premier venue for major regional and national tournaments, elevating Ontario as a key sports destination in the United States.

With 190 acres of top-tier athletic facilities, including 20 long fields, 14 youth diamond fields, 8 full-size diamonds, 4 football/rugby fields, and 2 championship baseball fields, the Ontario Sports Empire will be the largest sports complex of its kind west of the Rocky Mountains.

Weed and refuse abatement

The purpose of the Weed and Refuse Abatement Program is to prevent fire hazards caused by overgrown vegetation and the accumulation of combustible materials, while also improving the appearance of the city. City staff will conduct two inspections of vacant lots each year in Ontario to ensure that minimum fire safety standards are met.

The Día de Los Muertos Community Altar & Procession is returning, and the altar will be on display at the R. Jack Mercer Community Bandstand from Saturday, October 26, through Sunday, November 3, 2024. The main stage performance and procession will be hosted on November 1, 2024, from 5 PM – 9 PM. 

*Community Altar:* Participate by bringing your offering to the Armstrong Community Center and adding your story to the community altar, located at 1265 S. Palmetto Ave, between Monday, October 14, and Thursday, October 24, 2024. Entries must be delivered Monday through Friday only, between 8 AM and 4:30 PM.

*Altar Showcase:* Take pride and make your altar! Community members can register for their own 10’ x 10’ space along Euclid Ave. median to decorate. Proposals will be reviewed before approval.

The ShakeOut has also been organized to encourage you, your community, your school, or your organization to review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies, and to secure your space in order to prevent damage and injuries. ShakeOut is also a reminder for Californians to be prepared financially, such as by exploring earthquake insurance. The not-for-profit California Earthquake Authority offers earthquake insurance throughout California for homeowners, renters, mobilehome owners and condo-unit owners.

*What is the Weed and Refuse Abatement Program?*

Did you know the City of Ontario has a Weed and Refuse Abatement Program? Owners of vacant lots are required to keep their properties clear of trash, debris and weeds. However, in Spring and Fall each year, the Community Improvement Department conducts systematic inspections of vacant lots to ensure they are maintained to City standards. Fall inspections begin on October 7, 2024.

If vacant properties are in violation of City standards, the property owner receives a Notice of Violation and an opportunity to correct the issue. If the property is not cleaned up within two weeks, additional penalties begin to accrue. In some cases, the City is required to clean the property and passes the cost along to the owner.

The Weed and Refuse Abatement program is important for several reasons. It reduces the likelihood of fires spreading through our City, making our neighborhoods safer. It also increases the appearance of neighborhoods, helping make the City a better place to live.
