City of Long Beach News: We Have 2024 Homeless Count Numbers

Stay informed Click here to view in your browser. Welcome to our City Newsletter! Greetings! In this issue we have important data to share from our 2024 Homeless Point in Time Count results, our street count of people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach, which took place on Jan. 25, 2024. For the first time since 2017, the City has reported an overall decrease in homelessness. The City continues to make homelessness a priority. We still have work ahead of us, and we have included resources and important information below for people experiencing homelessness. Earlier this week we honored our fallen Police and Fire Department employees at the annual Police and Fire Memorial Ceremony. A longstanding tradition for the Police and Fire Departments, the ceremony was held at the Police and Fire Memorial monument in the Civic Center Plaza and paid tribute to the 29 police employees and 14 firefighters who lost their lives in service to the Long Beach community. Help us keep Long Beach clean by participating in our first Long Beach Citywide Spring Cleaning, a new month-long initiative that will help beautify our beaches, parks and public spaces through a series of hosted community cleanup events. Scroll down to get more information on resources, job openings, events and more. Long Beach Reports First Decrease in Homelessness Since 2017 Earlier this week we released findings of the 2024 Homeless Point in Time Count identifying 3,376 people experiencing homelessness in January 2024, compared with 3,447 people in 2023. This number signifies a 2.1% decrease from last year—the first time the City has reported an overall decrease in homelessness since 2017. After the homeless population in Long Beach jumped significantly following the COVID-19 pandemic, the City proclaimed a local emergency to strengthen the City’s preparedness and ability to respond. The emergency, which was in place from Jan. 10, 2023, through Feb. 28, 2024, put into place policies and programs that provided immediate assistance and laid the groundwork for positive long-term outcomes.
