Symphony San Jose pays tribute to the great Italian opera composer on the 100th anniversary of his death. Carlos Vieu returns in this retrospective that will feature operatic highlights from Giacomo Puccini’s early, middle, and late career masterpieces.

The Seasoned Woman is a celebration of the beauty, strength, resiliency, and wisdom of womanhood across time and cultures. A collaboration between poet and musician Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson and Syrian opera singer Lubana Al Quntar, this multidisciplinary, multicultural work marries poetry, music, and soaring vocals of reimagined jazz standards through the cultural and musical influences of the collaborating artists—including R&B, hip-hop, opera, and Middle Eastern music.

Mr. Kensho ・ Watanabe, conductor of "The Hours" （ Photo ） will join us to explain what to see ・ and hear in this new opera. The last minute study session is open to everyone, not just the participants of the viewing party.

Rodolfo loves Mimì, Marco loves Musetta, Colline loves philosophy, Schaunard loves music, and they all love their eccentric bohemian life in the garrets of Paris’ 19th century Latin Quarter. Starving artists all, this crazy cadre of young friends bear their poverty with laughter and grace, until it devastates them with unspeakable tragedy. With beloved favorites like “Che gelida manina,” “Quando m’en vo’,” and “Donde lieta uscì,” Puccini’s divinely romantic score memorably illustrates the joys, struggles, loves, quarrels, triumphs, and tragedies of six friends and lovers as they embody the true vie de bohème.

Noe ・ Soulier, director of the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine Angers since 2020 and a noted choreographer who has choreographed for the Lyon ・ Ballet de l'Opera and the Netherlands ・ Dance ・ Theatre 2\ (NDT2), makes her first appearance in Saitama. While an excerpt from the novel of the same name by Virginia ・ Woolf is narrated, the percussion rhythms of the contemporary music ensemble ・ Iktus and the movements of the six performers respond to each other, speaking to the viewer's memory. Wagner’s Tannhäuser is a musical story of lust, love, and deliverance, as the opera’s title character makes a pilgrimage from the magical realm of Venus to his final redemption in Rome. Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben is an epic portrayal of the hero that exists in all of us, along with the accompanying joys and struggles, depicted through battling brass and tender string melodies. Pianist Pavel Kolesnikov brings his “fluid, fine-toned” (Gramophone) playing to Mozart’s melodic Piano Concerto No. 17.

Mass in Exile is a deeply moving new work for chorus and orchestra by composer Mark Buller and librettist Leah Lax, whose previous collaborations include Overboard, commissioned by Houston Grand Opera. In Mass in Exile, composer and librettist embark on a gripping, personal exploration of their strict religious pasts. Together, they glimpse the possibility of a different kind of faith within an ailing world.

Under the direction of Dr. Juan Hernandez, the Grand Canyon University Choirs present the music of Broadway. Listen as the choirs, ensembles and soloists sing favorite songs from famous Broadway musicals from the Golden Age to today’s modern musicals. For a change of pace, several selections from beloved operas and pop will be also performed. GCU choirs are always a crowd favorite!

Given his reputation as a larger-than-life trickster, it’s little surprise that Mozart’s capacity for crafting characters from sound is unparalleled. ANAM’s Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen leads the MSO from the piano for this vivid insight into Mozart’s brilliance.
