Email from City of Reno RFD Commemorates Fire Prevention Week View as Webpage October 11, 2024 Reno Connect | Fire Prevention Week Connecting Citizens to Our Community Reno Fire Department Raises Awareness During Fire Prevention Week The Reno Fire Department celebrates this year's Fire Prevention Week by joining the campaign theme “Smoke alarms: Make them WORK for you!” with two fire safety videos that strive to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home to help survive a home fire. Each year Fire Prevention Week is observed during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire. A fire that began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires. Meet the Reno Fire Department's Extreme Team (a fun cartoon made for kids!) and learn How to Survive a Home Fire with these two educational videos. “We hope every family takes the time this week to check their smoke alarms and create an evacuation plan,” Reno Fire Marshal John Beck said. “Unfortunately, we've recently seen how important it is to have an evacuation go-bag ready and how damaging fire can be in our area.” During a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk of fires, making it important for every community member to take some time to ensure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.
