● It seems that homing brains are not just for birds. There are quite a few Japanese who have been active in the U.S. for many years, but are now moving back to Japan to spend their last days in Japan.
●But they are surprised by unexpected barriers when they come back to Japan. They think they are Japanese, but they are surprised to find out that their permanent residency or U.S. citizenship status, which they acquired during their stay in the U.S., is an obstacle to their entry into Japan ・ and permanent residence in Japan.
● American citizenship holders become Americans and are treated as foreigners in Japan, which does not recognize dual citizenship. Permanent residents must obtain a domicile to legally establish their existence since they did not have a domicile in Japan.
Not only that, but these individuals must also break with the US in order to avoid double tax liability from both the US and Japan. This means that they must renounce their permanent residence or citizenship in the U.S., and there are procedures and examinations to be completed in order to get out of the tax obligation, which is a very cumbersome task. The IRS will review your tax returns for the past five years, so you need to plan in advance when you should file.
● Moreover, the application process in Japan is taking longer than before, so applicants need to plan accordingly and prepare in advance. You may be surprised to find that it is not just a matter of getting there and getting by.
●In parallel, it is necessary to prepare for the shipment of household goods accumulated during your life in the U.S. to Japan. This will also take time to prepare.
① sort out what we will carry ・ what we will mail by air ・ what we will ship by sea and what we will dispose of in the US ( sell ・ donate ・ discard ),
③ It takes about 2 months by sea and about 2 weeks by air, so be prepared for that.
●If you are thinking of sending your pet or your car to Japan, please consult with the respective specialists. These things take a lot of time, so we recommend that you allow at least ( 6 months ) to work on them.
●This time you will learn about this area.
