Virtual ・ Opening ・ Reception Exhibition "Tansu" organized by Nippon Club WEB Gallery

The Japan Club Web Gallery ( https://nippongallery.nipponclub.org/ ) will present "Tansu," an exhibition of Japanese chests of drawers, one of Japan's most iconic pieces of furniture, from June 24 to August 4.

On the first day of the exhibition ( June 24 ( Friday ) ) at the opening reception, which will be held until 7:00 ~ 8:00 p.m., former Kyoto Women's University professor and director of the "Showa no Kurashi Museum" Ms. Kazuko Koizumi will talk about the history of tansu and Mr. Yoshihiro Takishita, an architect who moved into an old private home, will talk about his work with Yoshihiro Takihita, an architect of old private houses relocation, will talk about the similarities between old private houses and chests of drawers, and Genze Nagano, representative of NPO Engawa, will talk about chests remodeled with innovative ideas. Entertainment will be provided by violinist Mari Kimura, acclaimed by the NY Times as "a master who plays ahead of her time" for her innovative ideas using modern AI.

■ Kazuko Koizumi ( Koizumi ・ Kazuko )
Japanese life history researcher. Representative of the Kazuko Koizumi Institute of Life History. Director of Showa-no-Kurashi Museum. president of NPO Showa-no-Kurashi Museum. President of the Society of Interior History of Furniture and Tools. Director of the Kumagai Family Residence, an Important Cultural Property. Former professor at Kyoto Women's University. Books "Tansu" Hosei University Press 1982, "Wafu" Shogakukan 1996, "Funadansu no Kenkyu" Shibunkaku Shuppan 2011, and many others

■ Yoshihiro Takishita ( Yoshihiro Mashita ・ )
Architect of old private homes. Representative of NPO Japan Old House Preservation Association. Born in Gifu Prefecture. When he learned that a gassho-zukuri minka in his hometown was going to sink to the bottom of a lake due to the construction of a dam, he took it over, moved it to Kamakura, and began living in it. He then spent a year and a half touring 36 countries. While dealing with Japanese "antiques", he is also passionate about relocating ・ and revitalizing "minka" as an architect, and has designed and constructed 30 houses (, 4 of which are overseas ). ■ Nagano Gensei ( Nagano- ・ Gensei ).
Born as the eldest son of Nagano Kogyo, a wholesaler of road tools. Born in a house more than 100 years old, he grew up with baskets (tsuzuragomi), gyo-ri, chests, nagamochi, small chests, ledger chests, tea chests, and wardrobe chests as a familiar part of daily life. Although the use of chests of drawers is disappearing, we continue to revitalize chests of drawers by remaking them as usable items to suit modern lifestyles, and by mastering their storage configurations to meet the needs of modern life.

■ Kimura ( Kimura ・ Mari )
Violist composer. Studied under Toshiya Eto at Toho Gakuen School of Music. In 2007, she gave the world premiere of Junk Road ・ Lisse's Violin ・ Concerto. He performed subharmonics, playing an octave below the G line without changing the tuning. Awards include an American Society for Contemporary Music Award, Ken Nakajima Music Award, NY State Council on the Arts Grant, National Music ・ Institute for Acoustic Research IRCAM Resident Composer in Paris, Guggenheim Foundation Fellow in 2010, and a Fromm Commission from Harvard University. In 2013, he founded and directed the "Future Music Lab" program at the Atlantic Music Festival's Summer Music Festival. Since 1998, he has taught interactive computer music performance at The Juilliard School; since 2017, he has been a full professor in the Department of Composition ・ Improvisation ・ Technology Integration at the University of California, Irvine.
