Conservation Tip: Deck the Halls with Eco-Friendly Holiday Decorations

This holiday season, why not make your festivities kinder to the planet? Start by swapping traditional holiday lights for energy-efficient LEDs—they use up to 80 percent less energy and last longer. For a natural, rustic charm, decorate with fresh greenery, pinecones or handmade ornaments, all of which are biodegradable and sustainable. Skip single-use plastic decorations, and if you’re buying new items, shop second-hand or choose options made from recycled or eco-friendly materials.

When decorating outdoors, avoid using items like tinsel, artificial snow or small plastic pieces that can harm wildlife. Secure your outdoor lights to prevent them from tangling in trees or bushes, and use timers to automatically turn lights off late at night to reduce light pollution, helping protect nocturnal animals while saving energy.

With a little creativity, you can make a festive atmosphere that’s beautiful, sustainable and wildlife-friendly. Celebrate the holidays with decorations that spread cheer and protect the environment!

The Columbus Collision Wheelchair Rugby Tournament [ https://columbusrecparks.com/wellness/athletics/rugby/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] is back, and it’s an event you won’t want to miss!

Come cheer on eight incredible teams, including current and former Paralympians, as they battle it out in an electrifying competition. The tournament runs Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Cleo Dumaree Athletic Complex, located at 276 S. Nelson Road, 43205. The best part? Admission is completely free!

Calling All Theatre Artists: Audition for Gem of the Ocean

Columbus Recreation and Parks, in partnership with Trinity Theatre Company, is thrilled to announce the March 2025 production of August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean. This powerful play, the first in Wilson’s American Century Cycle, takes audiences on a journey of redemption, history and the pursuit of freedom. Set in 1904 Pittsburgh, the story unfolds in the home of Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old spiritual advisor, where Citizen Barlow arrives seeking redemption for a troubled past. 

We’re casting roles for a diverse adult ensemble, including Aunt Ester, Citizen Barlow and other vibrant characters who bring this story to life. Open auditions are Dec. 11 or 12 at 6 p.m. (attend one day only) at the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Ave. Free parking is available in the lot across the street.
