The Importance of a Good Job for People with Substance Use Disorder
A young person wearing a blue and purple plaid button-up shirt sitting on a couch and speaking with a counselor in a professional setting.
For many people, a good job offers purpose through meaningful work. For people in recovery from substance use disorder (SUD), such purpose can be a powerful driver of sustained sobriety. This month, during National Recovery Month, ODEP is highlighting our support for all workers with SUD or in recovery. Read Assistant Secretary Taryn M. Williams’ recent post on the U.S. Department of Labor blog and see our new resource, SUD in the Workplace, which contains a toolkit to help employers develop recovery-ready workplace policies, a guide for employers on supporting workers with SUD and a companion guide for workers themselves. AI Is in the Workplace. Let’s Ensure that It’s Equitable
Graphic of hands typing on a laptop with technology-related icons, including the letters AI, floating above.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds extraordinary potential to increase opportunity and access for workers with disabilities. But these same technologies come with risks. Depending on how they are designed and implemented, AI can potentially violate civil rights laws, undermine existing labor rights or create new barriers to economic opportunities. To advance inclusive technology, ODEP funds the Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT), an initiative that offers employers resources and practical guidance on disability inclusion when they choose to adopt AI. One new resource is the AI & Disability Inclusion Toolkit, which can help organizations mitigate discrimination and reduce bias in their AI technologies and make AI implementation more equitable.
