News from the City of Orlando
** August 2, 2024
------------------------------------------------------------
As hard as you try to ignore it, there’s a tropical something out in the ocean with a “cone of uncertainty.” And we all know that the predicted path and strength of a storm can change at any time, so let’s just make sure we’re prepared either way. As we have unfortunately learned, even small tropical storms can wreak havoc in our neighborhoods. And the last thing you want is to be in a two-hour long line at the grocery store holding onto the only can of asparagus and a pack of Swiss sparkly water because everything else was bought out. So, let’s do some shopping now and grab some yummy (and wanted) hurricane snacks and essentials.
Want to learn how to prepare? Here are some helpful links:

** Saying Goodbye to the First Dog of Orlando, Sammie
------------------------------------------------------------
Before we get to further city business, we are saddened to report the passing of Mayor Buddy Dyer’s dog, Sammie (https://www.instagram.com/thecitybeautiful/p/C-BUTwYvhyV/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=41f6d735be-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-41f6d735be-80648119&mc_cid=41f6d735be&mc_eid=UNIQID) . The 14-year-old labradoodle always brought joy to the staff and visitors of City Hall and at city events she attended. Sammie would often serve as city staff’s very own comfort companion at the Emergency Operations Center during major events. Her calm demeanor, friendliness and curiosity brought her many, many fans and we are all heartbroken by the loss. We send our love to Mayor Dyer, his wife Susie and the rest of their family.

** Fly away at Colonel Joe Kittinger Park
------------------------------------------------------------
By now, you’ve probably seen the big airplane off of the 408. But did you know it’s the F-4 Phantom aircraft, flown by Colonel Joe Kittinger during the Vietnam War? Born in July 1928, Colonel Kittinger served in the Air Force for 28 years, held the world record for highest skydive for 52 years, and became the first person to make a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a gas balloon in 1984.
Dedicated in 2014, the park pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Vietnam War Veterans. Visit to see this piece of history, watch as planes take off and land, and enjoy the park’s other amenities, including a playground, the trailhead for the Lake Underhill Path and more. See you at the park (https://www.instagram.com/p/C9xnIVxROte/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=41f6d735be-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-41f6d735be-80648119&mc_cid=41f6d735be&mc_eid=UNIQID) !

** Calling artists to help us celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
------------------------------------------------------------
We’re seeking local artists for our Hispanic Heritage Month Art Exhibit in the Terrace Gallery at Orlando City Hall. Local visual artists interested in being considered can submit their art proposals inspired by this year’s national theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.” Artists should showcase art pieces of Hispanic trailblazers who have left an indelible mark and made outstanding contributions to the wellbeing, prosperity and visibility of the Hispanic community in the United States.

** Ready to savor our local faves
------------------------------------------------------------
From now until Thursday, August 15, our 12 Orlando Main Street districts are hosting their annual Sip & Savor Weeks. This annual event celebrates the unique local flavors only found in the heart of our beloved neighborhoods with special food and drink deals.
One of the participating restaurants is a crowd favorite, Shin Jung Korean Restaurant, owned by Michael Lee and originally opened in Mills 50 District in 1993 by Michael’s parents. Michael and his family immigrated from Korea and served the community with authentic Korean BBQ until 2019, when a fire destroyed the building, and was initially rendered a “total loss.” Not about to give up on their legacy, Michael, his family, staff and the community rallied together to ensure Shin Jung was completely restored with a new and fresh aesthetic.
In 2021, Shin Jung Korean Restaurant reopened against all odds, and has now been recognized by the Michelin Guide every year since 2022, proving a community rallying behind a small business can keep a legacy alive. To visit Shin Jung Korean Restaurant, head to 1368 East Colonial Drive, or visit their website at shinjungkoreanbbq.com (https://www.shinjungkoreanbbq.com/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=41f6d735be-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-41f6d735be-80648119&mc_cid=41f6d735be&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
