New Report for 2024: Rural-Urban Disparities in Health Care in Medicare

________________________________________________________________________

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Minority Health (CMS OMH) is releasing a report entitled Rural-Urban Disparities in Health Care in Medicare [ https://www.cms.gov/files/document/fy2023-advancing-health-equity-rtgi-communities-year-review.pdf ]. This report presents summary information on the quality of health care received by people with Medicare nationwide, highlighting (1) rural-urban differences in health care experiences and clinical care, (2) how rural-urban differences in health care experiences and clinical care vary by race and ethnicity, and (3) historical trends in quality of care for rural and urban residents. The first two sections of the report focus on quality-of-care data reported in 2023. The section on trends in quality of care focuses on data reported 2017 to 2023.

Health care professionals, organizations, researchers, and hospital leaders can utilize this report, along with other CMS tools and resources, to help raise awareness of health disparities, develop interventions for people with Medicare living in diverse settings, and implement quality improvement efforts that improve health equity.

This report [ https://www.cms.gov/files/document/fy2023-advancing-health-equity-rtgi-communities-year-review.pdf ] is based on an analysis of two sources of information: the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) and the Medicare Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) survey. HEDIS contains information from medical records and administrative data on the technical quality of care that Medicare Advantage enrollees receive for a variety of medical issues such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic lung disease. The Medicare CAHPS survey is conducted annually by CMS and focuses on the health care experiences of Medicare Advantage enrollees and people with Medicare fee-for-service coverage across the nation.

CMS OMH welcomes your participation in promoting health observances such as National Rural Health Month throughout the year to raise awareness about health issues affecting people across our nation. Please share this report and our other resources in our Health Equity Resource Center, from our Rural Health page, and from our Research and Data page.
