City News: Pool Weather?

News and Events from the City of Orlando

News from the City of Orlando

------------------------------------------------------------
Paws in the Park
An ode to a pool day, in timeline format.
9:30 a.m. - It’s hot, we’re in the pool, we’re floating happy.
11:45 a.m. - It’s thundering, we’re inside; boo to the weather.
12 p.m. - It’s just raining, we’re standing outside but under an awning of some kind, so we’re outside/inside; we refuse to get wet by the rain.
1:20 p.m. - It’s hot, again, we’re in the pool, again.
3:45 p.m. - It’s raining, again, but it’s not thundering so we’re not leaving the pool.
5:30 p.m. - It’s just an old wives’ tale that you have to wait to get in the pool after you eat, right?
8 p.m. - It’s getting dark, why are all the mosquitos only biting me?!?!!?

** Speaking of pools....
------------------------------------------------------------
What better way to kick off the summer than a party at a new pool?

We’ve been busy ensuring you have top notch amenities that look and feel good, because we’ve been preparing for Hot Pool Summer. Our coolest amenity now is the newly renovated Northwest Pool, where its makeover includes fresh paint to upgraded diving platforms and locker rooms.

Last weekend, our Aquatics Division reopened the facility with a ‘welcome back’ event (check out the event recap on our socials (https://www.instagram.com/reel/C69SuGkRnDo/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D&utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=c55798f29b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-c55798f29b-80648119&mc_cid=c55798f29b&mc_eid=UNIQID) ). Nearby residents joined community partners for fun in the sun with a food truck, DJ, swim lessons and water safety workshops.

There’s a city pool near you waiting to be explored. All city pools are free to city residents so stop by and check it out. Maybe even sign up to try a water aerobics class or freshen up your skills with swim lessons for all ages? Swim lesson registration is open NOW and lessons are throughout the summer at the Dover Shores, College, Smith and Wadeview pools!

** Is this how proud parents feel?!
------------------------------------------------------------
By investing in our Families, Parks and Recreation youth programs, our city invests in young residents like our 87 high school graduates who were honored at Camping World Stadium this week. Additionally, this included awarding a record of 35 scholarships totaling more than $35,000.

Mayor Dyer, state officials and city staff celebrated students like Traniya and Keishaun who will soon graduate from Jones High School and continue their education. With a 4.8 GPA, Traniya plans to major in biomedical science at UCF. Keishaun has been in our kidz zone programs since the age of 6 and will major in sports management at the University of North Florida.

Through our kidz zone programs in Parramore, Holden Heights, Mercy Drive and Engelwood, our city offers young residents like Traniya and Keishaun academic support, mentoring, career assistance, health and wellness programs and more.

All of these graduates have worked hard, and with encouragement from our community, have been able to grow and thrive. We can’t wait to see what Traniya, Keishaun and the rest of these young graduates do next as they move into their next chapter.

** New Location and Route Announced for the 8th Annual CommUNITY Rainbow Run
------------------------------------------------------------
Join us for the 8th Annual CommUNITY Rainbow Run presented by Orlando Health on Saturday, June 8.

We are excited to announce the CommUNITY Rainbow Run is moving from Wadeview Park to Orlando City Hall Plaza, conveniently located at 400 South Orange Avenue in downtown Orlando. The new location means a larger space for the CommUNITY Festival and offers a unique race day experience for everyone, including a Kids Fun Run taking place on Seneff Arts Plaza in front of the Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts.

Along with the new location comes a new race route. The route will take participants south on Orange Avenue, passing the Orlando Health campus before continuing south to the Pulse site. The route then leads runners back north on Orange Avenue to the finish line at City Hall for the after-event festival.

We hope you will join us to run (or walk) to honor and remember the 49 angels, survivors, victims' families and all those impacted by the June 12, 2016, Pulse tragedy. Net proceeds from the event will benefit the Orlando United Pulse Memorial, a permanent memorial honoring the victims and the spirit of our community.

** Get those green thumbs ready
------------------------------------------------------------
No matter the time of year, or the temperature, we Floridians get to enjoy flexing our green thumbs year-round. Whether you’re a seasoned plant parent, or a first-timer, there’s never a wrong time of year here to enjoy the simple pleasures gardening has to offer. And there’s plenty of nurseries to choose from to provide those gardening needs, but today we’re over in College Park to tell you all about Apenberry’s Gardens.

Eric Apen and Lisa Elsberry met at Georgia Tech while pursuing careers in industrial engineering. While Lisa was thrilled to meet her now husband during those college years, she found she really wasn’t passionate about engineering. She spent time exploring different careers until she landed on her love of all things gardening. In 1995, she opened Apenberry’s in a small house on Fairbanks Avenue, and ten years later, Eric left his job to join his wife full time in the gardens.

Apenberry’s relocated to its current home in College Park, which provided a whole lot more land for outdoor plants. In early 2024 after nearly 30 years of business, hosting events, workshops and helping residents create their dream gardens, Lisa and Eric were ready to embark on a new chapter and sold the business to locals Laura Cosgrove and Debra Dremann Ushkowitz. The two longtime friends plan to keep the Apenberry’s name, while adding more activities such as yoga, photography and art experiences.

To visit Apenberry’s Gardens, head to 3443 Edgewater Drive, or visit their website at apenberrys.com (https://apenberrys.com/?utm_source=City+News&utm_campaign=c55798f29b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_01_07_03_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c482f52094-c55798f29b-80648119&mc_cid=c55798f29b&mc_eid=UNIQID) .
