足立姫の哀しいお話をご存じですか？
聖武天皇の時代、足立郡の庄司（荘園の管理者）である宮城宰相に足立姫という娘がおりました。
隣にある豊島郡の豊島左衛門尉に嫁いだものの酷いいじめを受け、姫は12人の侍女とともに荒川（現在の隅田川）に身を投げたそうです。
父親は姫の魂を慰めるために熊野詣に出かけ、そこで見つけた霊木を海に流すと不思議なことに、それは足立に流れ着きました。
たまたま足立に居合わせた行基菩薩にお願いし、霊木から6体の阿弥陀仏を彫ってもらい、6つのお寺に分けてお祀りしたそうです。
千住の古民家で文化体験を展開している「路地裏寺子屋rojicoya（ろじこや）」さんが、地域に伝わるこの昔話をモチーフとし、「足立姫プロジェクト」を始動。
国内外に向けた観光による地域振興策として、足立姫にちなんだビールや篠笛（しのぶえ）、絵本の製作、オペラやイベントの企画が進められていると聞きました。
その一環として、区内の老舗和菓子屋「喜田家」さんとのコラボで誕生した和菓子「足立姫」が、7月1日から発売されています。
江戸時代中期、桜の季節に足立姫由来の阿弥陀仏があるお寺を巡る「六阿弥陀巡り」が女性の間で大流行したことにちなみ、桜の花びらをイメージした羽二重餅に京都の柚子味噌餡が入った「足立姫」。
ぜひ味わってみてください。
五色桜といい、六阿弥陀巡りといい、江戸の郊外、ちょっと遠出の気分転換の観光地として、当時の足立は人気を集めたのですね。
