Construction in Fremont begins May 12

Fremont Project Area

Fremont project area: N 36th St between 2nd Ave NW and N 35th St, and Fremont Ave N between N 34th and N 36th St

Dear Community Members,

*Construction in Fremont begins the week of May 12. *We will start on street and watermain upgrades on Fremont Ave N between N 34th St and N 35th St. As part of this work, there is also a scheduled* street closure on May 17 *on Fremont Ave N between N 34th and N 35th St.

To learn more about what’s happening in the Fremont neighborhood, please visit our webpage [ https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/transit-program/transit-plus-multimodal-corridor-program/route-40---transit-plus?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#materials ] and check out the construction area [ https://www.seattle.gov/documents/Departments/SDOT/TransitProgram/Route%2040%20TPMC/Route_40_Fremont_Construction_Plans_Webapge.pdf?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] and construction activities [ https://www.seattle.gov/documents/Departments/SDOT/TransitProgram/Route%2040%20TPMC/Construction_Scope_Definitions_Route%2040.pdf?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]. Construction in the Fremont neighborhood is scheduled through 2025.

*Water Main Infrastructure Upgrades*

We're working with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) to replace a 100-year-old waterline under Fremont Ave N between N 34th St and N 35th St and inserting a new valve at Dayton Ave N and N 36th St. Completing the water main upgrades and the street upgrades at the same time will help reduce impacts to the community by coordinating major construction projects. This approach helps minimize travel disruptions, lower construction costs, and shorten the overall construction timeline compared to completing the projects separately.

When complete, the watermain upgrades are expected to:

* Improve capacity to deliver drinking water in your neighborhood
* Improve water system flow and pressure
* Ensure water service reliability and reduce disruptions by creating more backups in the system

*What to Expect:*

Water service impacts will vary based on construction progress and the location of infrastructure upgrades. Specific buildings in Fremont will experience disruptions at different times throughout the project and for varying durations as we complete these essential improvements.

*Advance Notifications*

We are committed to keeping you informed:

* Notifications will be shared via the project email list *at least one week in advance.* You can subscribe *here [ https://us-west-2.protection.sophos.com?d=govdelivery.com&h=0fd3e4c5e2be4591827bf154146cd519&i=NjVlMjQ4NzM0ODMzNjA1ZjY4NzdkMzc3&p=m&s=AVNPUEhUT0NFTkNSWVBUSVYvMXkb5y1rh_jmhCD6q3lAKUrO49ywWjW_y-N0Uq9DQw&t=dWw4Q05TeEhDaHRIYllVOWxSME1RejBJWW55M2hXMEVLellJUDB4QWdiaz0%3D&u=aHR0cHM6Ly9wdWJsaWMuZ292ZGVsaXZlcnkuY29tL2FjY291bnRzL1dBU0VBVFRMRS9zdWJzY3JpYmVyL25ldz9xc3A9V0FTRUFUVExFXzg%3D&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].*
* Flyers with detailed information will also be distributed to buildings that will be impacted *five **days before the scheduled shut off*.

First Scheduled Water Shut Off on Saturday, May 17:

*Date:* Saturday, May 17

*Time:* Approximately 6 AM - 12 PM

*What to Expect:*

* This water shut off will require a* full street closure on Fremont Ave N between N 34th St and N 35th St*. We advise residents and commuters to plan ahead and use alternate routes during this time to avoid disruptions. Signage and traffic rerouting will be in place to assist with navigation. See map below
* The Fremont Bridge will be open to vehicles, and people walking, biking, and rolling
* Sidewalks will remain open and access to businesses will be maintained
* Bikes will need to dismount on Fremont Ave, between N 35th St and N 34th St

As much as possible, we are actively working to reduce the area and duration of water shutoffs, as well as carefully planning their timing to minimize the impact on businesses that rely on access to water. This includes scheduling full street closures if it helps minimize the time residents are without water.

The project team is also mindful of the May 17 Parade [ https://us-west-2.protection.sophos.com?d=17thofmay.org&h=0fd3e4c5e2be4591827bf154146cd519&i=NjVlMjQ4NzM0ODMzNjA1ZjY4NzdkMzc3&p=m&s=AVNPUEhUT0NFTkNSWVBUSVYvMXkb5y1rh_jmhCD6q3lAKUrO49ywWjW_y-N0Uq9DQw&t=aDhDb0YxeUhmSDZxVDZqQkZneVpHZTZoaEYzRTZ2S1IrRms0RVRoYXBIVT0%3D&u=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuMTd0aG9mbWF5Lm9yZy8yMDI1LWV2ZW50cy9wYXJhZGU%3D&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] in Ballard and have ensured that construction will not interfere with the event, set to take place later in the afternoon.

Our team is actively providing affected business owners and residents with the most up-to-date information. If you have any specific questions or require further assistance, please reach out to us at Route40@seattle.gov

You can learn how best to prepare for water main work by visiting  SPU's webpage [ https://www.seattle.gov/utilities/neighborhood-projects/water-outages/planning-for-outages?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] for tips on preparing for a water outage.

Temporary bus stops during Fremont construction

As crews mobilize for work in Fremont, please note that buses will be rerouted around the active work zone to temporary stops for Routes 31, 32, 40, and 62.

*Where will the temporary bus stops be?*

Temp bus stops
* The northbound Route 40 stop on Fremont Ave N will be rerouted to Fremont Pl N and N 36th St near the Lenin statue
* Routes 31, 32, and 62 buses that also use the northbound Fremont Ave N stop will have a temporary bus zone on N 35th St just east of Fremont Ave N.
* Southbound Routes 31, 32, and 62 buses will be rerouted from N 35th St to N 34th St via Stone Way N. There will be a temporary bus zone on the west side of Stone Way N between N 35th St and N 34th St
* The southbound stop on Fremont Ave N served by Routes 31, 32, 40, and 62 will be temporarily relocated to the far side of N 34th St, approximately 300-400 feet south of the current stop

Metro riders can expect these new temporary stops to serve these routes as early as May 12. These temporary bus stops are anticipated to serve riders through 2025.

What’s Happening on Westlake Ave N?

Please visit our project webpage for detailed construction updates and neighborhood impacts along Westlake Ave N. This includes:

* *8th Ave N and Galer St*: Full closure of 8th Ave N at Westlake Ave N between May 9-11. Originally, overnight work was anticipated but this has since been scheduled to be completed during the day. Construction and temporary lane reductions are expected throughout the month of May
* *Aloha St and 9th Ave N*: Trenching and sidewalk improvements throughout May. Please expect vehicle lane reductions and follow pedestrian and bicycle detour routes and signs.
* The bicycle detour near Westlake Ave N and 9th Ave N and Aloha St will last until the middle of the week of May 12, and we plan to reopen it for bicyclists after. Please follow all detours necessary and use caution when traveling on your bicycle. Thank you for your patience and understanding
