DCWP Announces More Than $2.5 Million in Worker Relief

DCWP secured restitution for workers from seven major fast food and retail businesses to resolve violations of the City’s workplace laws. Starbucks, Cava, a health care staffing agency, the operator of Jimmy Jazz and Hyperactive, a Burger King franchisee, two Wingstop franchisees, and an Auntie Anne’s franchisee will pay more than a combined $2.5 million in relief to 3,000 workers, and more than $230,000 in civil penalties and costs. DCWP Protects Families From Deceptive Businesses

DCWP announced https://www.nyc.gov/site/dca/news/020-24/department-consumer-worker-protection-files-lawsuit-against-r-g-ortiz-funeral-home-for a lawsuit against R.G. Ortiz Funeral Home Inc. for exploiting grieving families by refusing to provide information regarding the whereabouts of their loved ones remains, misrepresenting or concealing the prices of services offered, and failing to provide services that were paid for among many other violations of the City’s Consumer Protection Law. R.G. Ortiz operates eight locations in NYC, primarily targeting Spanish-speaking communities. DCWP’s lawsuit seeks restitution for consumers and civil penalties. DCWP Releases Tips for the End of the School Year

The end of the school year can be an exciting, but stressful time for college students. DCWP released tips https://www.nyc.gov/site/dca/news/024-24/take-stress-out-summer-department-consumer-worker-protection-provides-end-school to help ensure that students are aware of their rights and know how to protect themselves in the marketplace including advice to beware of predatory moving company, Dorm2Dorm. In 2023, DCWP filed a lawsuit against Dorm2Dorm LLC, a moving and storage company that targets New York City area college students. DCWP Helps Shut Down Unlicensed Smoke Shops

Mayor Eric Adams announced the results of week one of Operation Padlock to Protect https://www.nyc.gov/site/dca/news/022-24/mayor-adams-initiates-operation-shut-down-unlicensed-smoke-cannabis-shops-across-five, a five-borough operation to shut down unlicensed smoke and cannabis shops. In one week, the New York City Sheriff’s Joint Compliance Task Force — made up of members from the Sheriff’s Office, the New York City Police Department (NYPD), and the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) — sealed 75 locations. Through helping to execute the City’s legal authority, DCWP aims to protect the health and safety of all New Yorkers, especially the City’s youth.
