Streptococcal infections ( Group A streptococcal pharyngitis ) are increasing.

Group A streptococcal pharyngitis is an infection caused by the bacteria group A streptococcus. It is most common in school-aged children, but any age can be affected.
In the Surveillance of Outbreaks of Infectious Diseases, the number of patients reported per sentinel for group A streptococcal pharyngitis in Chiba Prefecture in the 49th week of 2023 ( from December 4 to 10 ) was 8.17, an increase from 6.29 in the previous week.
Nationwide, the number of cases is considerably higher than in the same period of the past five years, so it is important to prevent infection by washing hands ・ and gargling.

[Symptoms]
・ Sudden fever ( over 38°C ) , general malaise, sore throat. Often accompanied by vomiting.
・ Swollen lymph nodes in neck and strawberry tongue ( Tongue may be swollen and strawberry-red grains may form ).

[Prevention of infection]
・ To prevent droplet and contact infection, wash your hands and gargle.
・ If there is a patient nearby, avoid close contact.

[Treatment]
・ Treat with antibacterial drugs. To prevent complications ( such as nephropathy ), it is important to take the medication for as long as directed by the doctor, even if symptoms improve.
