*Tailoring nutrition programs to the needs of communities*

Nutrition programs play a key role in efforts to achieve health equity. And people are more likely to participate in nutrition programs that offer culturally appropriate foods.

For ideas on how to tailor a nutrition program to the local community’s dietary needs and preferences, review a recently released cultural food guide [ https://uconnruddcenter.org/cultural-foods/?utm_campaign=fyi_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].

Available on the University of Connecticut Rudd Center for Food Policy and Health website, the guide includes tips for:

* Starting conversations
* Creating and conducting surveys
* Conducting a self-assessment
* Collaborating with partners

*Incorporating traditional foods into LTSS*

Elders tend to enjoy a better quality of life when they have access to foods that are familiar to them and have cultural significance.

That’s why many tribal LTSS programs serve traditional foods.

To learn more, check out the LTSS TA Center’s resources on traditional foods [ https://www.cms.gov/training-education/partner-outreach-resources/american-indian-alaska-native/ltss-ta-center/focus-areas/traditional-foods ].

The resources include an award-winning six-minute video [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5q5qnkUozM ] on the incorporation of culturally focused nutrition into LTSS programs.

*Helping elders with IDD navigate care transitions*

Elders who experience stress, depression, and anxiety in connection with sudden care transitions may benefit from a visit with a mental health care professional. However, many elders with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have difficulty communicating, which can affect the quality of care they receive.

For that reason, an article in a recent issue of "Generations Journal" [ https://generations.asaging.org/mental-health-care-needs-layered-marginalities ] recommends asking elders with IDD whether they would like a trusted family member, friend, or agency staff member to accompany them when seeking care.

The article also highlights the need for training that will enhance the ability of mental health care professionals to serve elders with IDD. Ideally, that training would help care professionals recognize behavioral changes that may be caused by dementia or inadequate pain management.

*Do More, Feel Better*

Elders with depression tend to withdraw from activities and isolate themselves. To counteract that tendency, 24 senior centers have enlisted specially trained volunteers, peers, and social work interns to implement a nine-week intervention.

Known as Do More, Feel Better [ https://generations.asaging.org/mental-health-task-sharingvolspeersinterns ], the intervention increases participation in rewarding and meaningful activities by helping elders:

* Brainstorm and plan activities to pursue
* Reflect on recent interactions with others
* Develop an overall plan for staying engaged

*Keeping care facility residents socially engaged*

Social engagement enhances the physical and mental health of elders, regardless of where they live. To that end, an article in last month’s issue of "Caring for the Ages" [ https://www.caringfortheages.com/article/S1526-4114(24)00133-1/fulltext ] offers tips for making sure care facility residents have opportunities to interact with others. Those tips include:

* Informing facility staff of a resident’s favorite activities and hobbies
* Including socialization and activities in each resident’s care plan
* Encouraging families to join residents for a meal or activity
