Celebrating More Than 20 Years of Work-Based Learning in Massachusetts
reading, “MCB Massachusetts Commission for the Blind.”
In 2003, Massachusetts Commission for the Blind’s (MCB) director of staff development John Oliveira piloted a summer internship program for two college students. Today, Oliveira is MCB's commissioner and his pilot has grown into a full-fledged statewide Summer Internship Program providing competitive work-based learning opportunities for youth and young adults who are blind or have low vision. Since the program’s inception, MCB has provided approximately 900 internships in collaboration with more than 400 employers. Each year, it places 90 students on average into internships, more than 70% of whom are on track for permanent employment after program completion.
