Midday sailings on West Seattle and Vashon Water Taxi continue through winter
Picture of Water taxi - Sally Fox docked

This fall and winter, the King County Water Taxi will continue to be a transportation option for riders going to and from West Seattle and Vashon. On Monday, Oct. 14, sailings from Seattle’s Pier 50 will continue from downtown to Seacrest Dock in West Seattle. The popular midday service between downtown and Vashon will stay in place Monday through Friday for the fall and winter.

*Treat yourself!
*Enjoy a 15-minute ride to West Seattle or a 22-minute sail from Vashon and take in the panoramic views of the Seattle city skyline and Mount Rainier on your way to the waterfront. Both routes will be operating the day after Thanksgiving, so riders can make plans to get some Black Friday bargains!

*West Seattle Service*

The seven-day-a-week service will run from approximately 6 a.m. weekdays (8:30 a.m. weekends) to 7 p.m. Weekday sailings will leave the dock every 35 minutes during peak commute hours and every hour during the mid-day, and on weekends. _There will be no Friday or Saturday sailings after 7 p.m. starting Friday, October 18_

During commute hours, riders can take the free Metro shuttles to and from the Water Taxi landing at Seacrest Park. Route 773  [ http://kingcounty.gov/depts/transportation/metro/schedules-maps/773-fall-winter.aspx ]serves the West Seattle junction. Route 775  [ http://kingcounty.gov/depts/transportation/metro/schedules-maps/775-fall-winter.aspx ]serves the Admiral District and Alki.

*"The online fall and winter schedule will be updated on October 11."*

Work to correct RapidRide G Line shelters to begin Friday

Starting as early as Friday, crews will begin work to correct paint and weld issues on recently installed RapidRide G Line bus shelters. *Bus service will be unaffected* and the work will occur in stages, with shelters being temporarily removed two to four at a time. Riders can continue to use all bus stops along the route throughout this process.

The work on the 25 shelters will take place off-site. Work on each shelter is expected to take anywhere from a few hours (i.e., an immediate switch of shelters) to up to three weeks. The project is expected to be completed within approximately three to four months.

This work will reduce future maintenance and increase the lifespan for the structures. The work on the shelters includes addressing paint thickness and color, incorrect welds, and holes within the frames of the shelter that if left unaddressed could lead to rust and other damage.

The 2.8-mile RapidRide G Line is a partnership between the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and King County Metro.

Recognizing Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month

A message [ https://kingcountymetro.blog/2024/10/04/recognizing-latinx-hispanic-heritage-month/ ] from DeAnna Martin, Metro Chief of Staff

Earlier this month, Executive Dow Constantine proclaimed Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 as Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month [ https://kcemployees.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/2024-latinx-hispanic-heritage-month-english.pdf ]. I would like to take a moment to recognize this annual observance, which celebrates the cultural, educational, economic and political contributions of the Latinx/Hispanic communities across our region and country.

National Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month was enacted into law on Aug. 17, 1988, by President Ronald Reagan and is observed annually from Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, coinciding with the national independence celebrations of several countries. The Latinx/Hispanic community is the second-largest ethnic group in the U.S., representing a diverse range of identities and heritages rooted in Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Annually, the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers [ https://www.nationalcouncilhepm.com/ ] (NCHEPM) leads the process to select the annual theme and corresponding poster [ https://static1.squarespace.com/static/6361a7ebd060c756ad07b5c6/t/66ce3ae775e9645ad1c7595e/1724791527194/2024+NCHEPM+Hispanic+Heritage+Month+Poster+final+edit.pdf ] (image above) that various federal agencies use to observe Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month. This year, the theme is "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together".

As we work toward creating safe, clean, and reliable service, understanding the history and experiences of the diverse communities we serve enables us to improve regional mobility and quality of life for all in King County. I encourage you to spend time this month learning about by visiting the Sea Mar Museum of Chicano/a/Latino/a Culture in Washington State [ https://seamarmuseum.org/ ], checking out this digital guide from Revisiting Washington [ https://revisitwa.org/heritage_tour/latino-heritage/ ] that highlights the Latino history, culture, and scenic routes in the region, supporting local Latinx-owned small businesses, [ https://intentionalist.com/latino-owned-small-businesses/ ] and exploring local events and experiences [ https://visitseattle.org/press/press-releases/hispanicheritagemonth/ ] that honor and celebrate the cultural contributions of the Latinx/Hispanic community.
