Tomonokai Corner Exhibition "Local Toy Series - No.59 Kokeshi Kiboko ～ Dolls of Yunomachi ～"
In this exhibition, traditional kokeshi dolls from the collection will be displayed by lineage and their characteristics will be introduced.
Kokeshi dolls originated as a local toy unique to the Tohoku region. There are various theories as to the origin of the word "kokeshi," including a transliteration of "yokeshi ）," a toy to ward off disease, and "kogeshi （," which means to shave wood to make. Originally a type of wooden toy such as a koma, it was sold as a souvenir to visitors to hot spring cures, and spread to various regions. From around the Taisho period (1912-1926), they became the object of collection ・ and appreciation, and the number of lovers increased. The simple floral patterns, line-based body patterns, and molds varied according to the region where they were made.
In this exhibition, traditional kokeshi dolls from the collection are displayed by lineage to introduce their characteristics.
