Vacant houses in Japan

I am from Wakayama Prefecture, and it seems that the number of vacant houses is increasing near my parents' house.

I would like to hear honest opinions from people who live in the US and have purchased vacant houses in Japan.
The internet is full of information that it was good, and I feel the same way on Youtube
I wonder what the truth is.

If you have any good, bad, regrettable or recommendable points
I would be happy to know.

I am wondering if it would be possible for my family of five to live there when I go back to Japan, or if I could rent it
since the university is close by.
