Close to 100 documents on display for the first time
highlighting the rich lifestyle and culture that flourished in and around the city !.
Rekihaku successively received Netsuke ・ Inro ・ Bag Collection ( H-1869 ) in 2013, Cigarette Case ( H-1904 ) in 2016, and Inro and Inro chest ( H-1923 ) in 2018 The museum is now exhibiting the collection of the Inro and Inro chests in the museum collection. This year's featured exhibition will focus on previously undisclosed items from the museum's collection, including Inro and tobacco pouches, both of which were used as men's ornaments.
Inro were portable medicine cases worn by samurai families and some wealthy merchant men, and rapidly came into fashion from the early modern period. From the beginning, the function of these wares as personal ornaments was emphasized, and many of them were decorated using advanced craftsmanship. Meanwhile, cigarette cases, which became popular as the custom of smoking spread, also spread among the common people, especially townspeople, as a practical accessory, and were loved by them until the modern age.
Inro and tobacco pouches, which are small in size but express the particularity of the person who uses them, represent a condensed version of Japanese culture in which people of all ranks enjoyed the act of adorning themselves. This exhibition highlights the rich lifestyle culture that flourished mainly in urban areas through the variety of materials, fine craft techniques, and witty decorative designs found in these objects.
